  • Replace battery need to reset airbags ?

    Hi all,
our multivan 2007, tdi 4motion , needs a new battery as isn't holding charge so well anymore. Dealer replacement price was 480 , lube mobile with a high performance century with 2yr warranty $310 and the battery delivered to our house $235 for me to install. The dealer told my wife that after putting in a new battery you need to reset the airbags and I just wanted to ask if anyone can confirm this ?
    Many thanks

I do not know for sure, but I presume that any problem with the airbags will be highlighted via an airbag warning light on the dashboard. If there is no air bag warning light contantly lit up, then the car must be thinking that it checked the air bags and everything is fine.

Also, note that airbag explosive cartiridge service life is 10 years, so in couple of years, you will be up for replacing all the airbag cartiridges, if you would like to keep their effectiveness.

Thanks for the airbag info, there's no warning lights etc from what I could work out they were trying to say that post battery install some sort of electronic 'activation' to the airbag needed to happen. it sounds slightly unbelievable and would surprise me but I'm no mechanic so wanted to check. They dropped the quoted price from 480 to 350 after we price checked and flagged the other options.

I have changed batteries in 3 of our T5's several times in fact and never had any problems at all the only thing that needs to be reset is the power windows , screw the dealer they are just acting like vampires and want to suck you dry . The power windows is easy just pull upwards on the switches and hold for a few seconds and its done . Some battery places actually put a small back up battery onto the system to hold memory , but its not a necessity .

            Hi Mark
I have a VCDS and live in Melbourne if you did need to reset/scan for a fault after a battery change but very much doubt you will get one.

Hey fransnz, thanks heaps for the offer, we ended up getting the dealers price down enough to make it easier to get them to do it and my wife's taken it away for the weekend. Whilst on her trip down the coast the ESP dash light came on and off intermittently and has now stayed off so far. She pretty much took it straight from the dealer when she left so will need to give them a buzz on Tuesday morning.
              Cheers

I have disconnected batteries on many VAG cars all with no airbag light or fault coming on. Just remember negative off first and on last.
