Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • 12v power source

    Hi,
I am looking for a 12v power wire around the radio or fuse box area that I can splice into that switches off with the ignition which I can use to power a wireless reversing camera screen on my 2012 Transporter
I want to hardwire it in and not use the cig lighter socket.
Have tried tapping into the radio power wire but it won't switch off with the ignition and drains the battery
    Thanx

You could use the Narva Add a circuit. Did you look in the sticky thread for which fuse to tap into?

      Thanx for your reply Transporter
Yes I did look at the sticky thread but I wouldn't have a clue which fuse to tap into.

You could use the cigarette lighter socket fuse no.12 as in this post http://www.vwwatercooled.com/forums/...tml#post482586

Just check first if there is 0V when you remove the key from ignition.

Best method is to use a test meter and touch each fuse with ignition on and then turn off to find one that goes out at the same time , then as was posted use an Add a Fuse I have hundreds of them I use for work and import them directly from China those Narva ones are ridiculously overpriced. Okay here you go this where we plugged our camera into last one on middle row of bottom batch of fuses right next to screw holding fuse block in place

I wish it were that simple, the cigarette lighter socket is permenantly on (12v) even with the ign key removed
Same with the power wires going to the radio are permenantly on (12v)
even tho the radio switches itself off after 30min with key removed.

EDIT just saw your last post Thanx Sunny43.5 I'll do that

Isn't there a Terminal 15 interface under the passenger seat?

ANother way of doing it is as I have done for my dashcams.

I have used a spare fuse socket in the fusebox and put a fuse in with a wire already soldered to it (Hard to do yourself)

I just metered each one and turned the key off each time Several were only on with the ignition so I just used one of them. Also needed an Always on so got one no trouble.

This is the fuse I used Get it from Jaycar comes in standard and mini sizes $6.95 each Work like a charm Put it in with the wire on the blank size so it will still work as a fuse. If its the other way it wont as poower will be direct to the pin.

No problem just thought I could save you a few bucks the "Add a fuse" at 95 cents each versus $6.95 each for the Jaycar one is a no brainer .

There is a 12v source that switches off with the ignition in the light switch. Push the switch in and turn right and it comes out to give access.
