Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • T5 Transporter Clutch Shudder?

I have a 2012 T5 Transporter 5 speed manual and I have been experiencing what I call "clutch Shudder" for some time particularly when it is cold or very hot. Mild temperature it seems ok. Basically from a stationary start the van basically shudders or shakes as the clutch is released. The clutch does not slip however. Has anyone else faced this? I assume the clutch plate / pressure plate has an issue?

Three little letters for you DMF it's a lovely piece of technology that "might" be the problem normally if you try to reverse up a slight hill it will shudder like hell . My T5 has the DMF and its been shuddering for years but only in reverse , I can generate a small shudder if I try to take off fast up hill . Here you can see how its constructed and how it works 3D animation of dual mass flywheel - YouTube But hey I could be completely wrong someone else may have an alternative answer , another thing in the old days if the slave cylinder leaked the fluid could get on the clutch plate and cause problems as well .

usually when the dual mass flywheel has too much free play it will rattle at idle.. does it rattle at idle around the gearbox area and then the noise goes away if you depress the clutch?? even if the clutch is not slipping and there is no noise from the flywheel sounds like you have a pressure plate issue.. how many km's has it done and do you carry a heavy load.?

        Won't be the DMF.

It'll be hot spots on the flywheel surface itself causing the shudder.

My '06 1.9 shuddered really bad when I first bought it. After 30,000kms of driving it my way, it's solved itself, although it is quite worn now.

Yes no unusual noises etc. It's travelled 37,000kms so far and has done this for over 20,000kms. I do carry around 400kgs of extra weight in the rear but I guess for a van that's typical. Hot spots on the flywheel sound the most plausible at this stage. I might try for a warranty claim!

Over the years I have found the same thing. How you engage the clutch in relation to the accelerator over time can start the clutch to shudder. I drive smoothly with an ever slight slip on the clutch with a small amount of power on. A constant jerky gear change can induce clutch shudder.
I used to own a Toyota Forerunner [2.8 diesel] that always had a tendency to shudder. The PO said that it had done it from new. Toyota said it was OK but he insisted [at his expense] that the clutch be removed & corrected. A new clutch was fitted & flywheel machined & the shudder was still there. On reflection there may have been a engine mount problem. I just put up with it [it wasn't too bad] & eventually I sold it.
