Yes I agree too many vital gauges being replaced with a some almost useless lights . I have fitted one of those HUD displays it connects to the OBD port and gives several bits of info whilst driving , tacho /fuel usage/ speed / overspeed in gears and you can set your own temperature level to give warning sound and sign which you can see right in your line of sight , some models have other features as well . I know its not as good as the old temperature gauge but it's better than nothing I suppose . Available on Ebay from $46 up to $115 . Lack of gauges etc becoming standard on new cars worries me especially with the fact that when we received our new T5 it came with a sort of cryptic message that told us that VW's seem to use more oil between services than I we would be used to , even the dealer told me that if the oil level is low between service we can call in and get a free top up , yes so if the oil light comes on and we drive the 40 odd kays to the dealer and it blows the engine who pays ??? . I am not alone with the oil business over on VW's Facebook page it seems to be well documented that several VW models use what seems excessive oil from new .
Sorry transporter my oil comment was a bit off topic , I will add here as a youth growing up the temp gauge was absolutely vital to one knowing how their car was working . I would suggest that modern cars and their makers are probably more reliable but temp gauge is a no brainer and would save some heartache . When our first T5 threw up a temp warning light I was bamboozled as the water level was down {the usual water pump problem} but the engine was showing normal temp Umai is right some will drive on regardless but in my case 300 kays from any help I topped up the water tank and then watched the temp gauge like a hawk until I got home . The HUD I have seems close to the unit you have shown .
The HUD in our van is a small unit which sits flat on the top of the dash a cable goes around the end of the dash and plugs into the diagnostic port just under the dash driver side , it reflects the image onto a semi clear plastic piece that sticks to the inside of the windscreen . You can see the images without taking yours eyes off the road , whilst I have not had a temperature warning as yet I would imagine it is the same sort of warning I get when over revving it gives a sharp beep tone and maybe a temp sign comes up on the screen but not sure as I said . i have one of these and they are excellent.if you have an appropriate Garmin GPS this plugs into your obd2 port and connects via bluetooth.its called a ecoroute hd.

One of the reasons why temperature gauges are not provided is that they are the cause of many service bookings that the manufacturers believe are not warranted.
In many cases, there is no indication of what the actual temperature is, just that it is "normal". It all depends on the accuracy of the sender and the gauge itself. On my old Torana, GMH got a huge number of service bookings for "overheating" that were because of a wayward batch of senders, so all they did was change the specification for the sender so that the gauge indicated lower. Then they got bookings because owners felt the engine was not warming up!
It is easier to get a sender that provides one accurate reading than one that gives an accurate, progressive reading, hence some newer vehicles having just a LED or one that changes colour that is useless to those who are colour blind.
The problem with an aftermarket gauge is getting it to look reasonable. Then again, there are many who have extra gauges in pods that sit on the dashboard, or a console, or overhead.

That one seems to have an actual temp dial on it.. Yours doesn't have that? It looks like a reasonable option as I don't want tacky gauge pods everywhere..
I honestly expected it to be a case of only the luxury models came with them or something.. I'm surprised its a common thing!
