Later I had a noise on overrun. Like a diff whine it would only happen on closed throttle and hard accelerating. I dropped the gearbox oil and it was very thin and grey from aluminium contamination. I had the gearbox pulled and we found the gearbox input shaft bearing had spun in the housing. The housing was ruined. This is apparently very common as the bearing is only retained by two thin circlips has no flange or step and is very thin. I had the housing machined and bushed and we have our fingers crossed. My mechanic has done several of these and the repair has been successful. He sees it as a serious design flaw and an inevitable failure for all 5 speeds at some point in higher miles.
Personally I would change the oil out regularly and as soon as any greying is evident or a SOS finds alloy I would have it pulled down before the bearing spins in the housing.
I am hoping the 6 speed in the T5.2 4motion is stronger? Anyone know?

It doesn't surprise me.
I change the gear oil in my MY05 4Motion every 20,000km it's just a cheap insurance. Even if you would do it every 40-45kkm it still would prolong the life of the gearbox.Performance Tunes from $850Wrecking RS OCTAVIA 2 Link

Agree "Transporter". What gearbox does your 4motion have? Can you tell me where I can find which gearboxes were fitted to which models? I would love to know if the 6speed is basically the same as the 5 speed. I suppose spare parts could tell me if the input shaft bearing is the same. If they are I will be watching and listening carefully to my new one.

as these are on the same shaft with a tapered roller bearing at each end and one could be on the way out as mine was - check the oil for metal particles - these 2 bearings are only under load during power on and (power off going down hill) remember a stitch in time saves nine! don't keep driving it. Best of luck T5 Double off road.
