Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • 4motion gearbox

Anybody had problems with 6 sp 4motion gearbox manual.
Was driving it a week ago and head a loud clunk then lost all gears.
Van ended up on back of towtruck.
Got the news today gearbox needs to be rebuilt or replaced.
Transmission mechanic suggests rebuilt since you know what you are getting.
$3900 for full rebuild, 1900 for clutch, plus $1000 for labor to remove and refit.
Its a mechanic (transmission specialist) I have never used, does this seem about right?
    Is this common with manuals?
    Cheers

DMF failure maybe its one of those stupid VW things they expect two springs to absorb all the drive train torque , apparently if they fail big time it can destroy the gearbox housing as well . I have one in my T5 still going after 250.000 kays but I still hold my breath . Also there have been some issues with the drive shafts failing [about to replace mine in case ] its making some unusual noises on drivers side .

      Hey Matt,
price seems good, I recently replaced a t5 6m box in a 4mo, $5k second hand, + $1750 for clutch flywheel and bearing, $1k labour....
Not a common problem, mine had 185k km, and was a little noisey before it just went bang.....
      good luck
