I think that your answer will only be if you want genuine then VW is the only way , as I said you cannot buy the VW towbar other than from VW I have tried already . Now there may be an alternative which is the same as VW or close to it .I found the guys at Speedy Towbars at Springwood pretty helpful as they had the "alternative " harness for around $120 no problems with Canbus as it uses diode protected relays in a neat module so there is no coding needed . But if you want all the systems that are part of the genuine one then that's the only way to go , factory harness /factory bar / factory coding and it will then have all the bells and whistles integrated with the dash display etc . Being a tight arse myself I cannot see any value myself in going with the genuine on a base model van . From what I have been told the genuine harness integrates with the dash display which will tell you if a trailer light is out , and I think it recognizes that you have a trailer on the back and is supposed to dim the taillights so as not to give too much reflection off the trailer , someone may be able to give more insight into that one .
