Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Help wanted fitting KW springs and shocks to T4 (Melbourne)

    Hey,

im looking at saving a few dollars whilst learning the ropes on fitting suspension.

My FK kit (just realised its not KW)should arrive next week and I want to take my van off its stilts. If anyone is willing to help me I can pay in beers and food and It will notionally renew your man card.

i just don't have the tools or know how for this kind of job, I'm more of an electrics man but always like to learn new things.

worst case scenario, can someone recommend a decent place to get them fitted without having to sell off my kids to fund it.

I will also divulge the details of the supplier of these FK AK street coilover kits for $350 shipped!

T4 is very easy to do no real issues at all unbolt stock front stocks and fit new ones the T4 has a wind torsion bar system down to lower just use long arm bar with socket to lower , rears jack up and remove shock , support lower arm and remove sppring refit new one and fit new shock a no brainer job .

I don't have a jack that gives me the height or confidence. Last times worked under a scissor jack (removing a back muffler) the car fell,
Luckily I wasn't under, I was pulling from the back.

I think I want to watch/help for my first attempt. If its really easy, a garage fit probably won't cost that much

Time for a lecture. The T4 is a heavy vehicle & only a decent jack[not the jack in the tool kit] should be used if working underneath. This should be backed up by strong jack stands. A vehicle like the T4 can kill you if it isn't supported correctly & you won't get a second chance to learn from your experience.
Understand how it works, troubleshoot logically BEFORE replacing parts.

Yes fully agree with that one once one wheel is off the ground they can be very unstable if not on a decent sort of jack .

Seriously, don't go under a vehicle unless it's supported by stands or a timber pyramid. Bricks aren't an option.

Buy a decent trolley jack & some stands off eBay. You'll use it over & over.

Hi, You got a Garage at home that your van fits into. Are the shocks coilovers or are you referring to the shocks & coil springs separately.

                  Hi,

I know not to work under the jack alone and I have 2 ton axle stands and 2 trolley jacks, neither of which get the required height without a wooden block. I haven't even attempted any work with the scissor jack provided.

I'm afraid I don't have a garage but could easily get into indoors, I'm in defence and there's large hangers/covered training areas I could use. I would just have to use my own tools.

The shocks are called coilivers but there is no real coilover system for the T4. It's an adjustable spring & damper system. If you search FK AK street you'll see the kit to give you a better idea mate
