  • T4 5cyl LPG

I seem to be doing more km in my T4 DOKA syncro, but 16l/100km around town is not good.
I enquired about LPG, but the only system offered for a 5cyl is the old vapour units. Has anyone seen the gas or liquid injection conversions locally as done in the UK?

Hi Racemag, I am currently running a T4 5cyl with Lpg. I use about 20L/100km, so it is saving me money, but I am not the biggest fan of the system. It is a vapour unit, and under the bonnet is a nightmare of wires and pipes. It makes maintenance a big drama. I have scuba tanks under the centre of the car, keeping all my luggage space, but reducing rampover a bit.

Just make sure that you get your money worth for your investment, when installing into the older vehicle. You can buy a lot of fuel for the cost of install.
How many km on the van?

        a lot, over 400,000km.
I'm restricting my use of it as it gets around 15l/100km.
If I look at a tank of PULP 95 RON as costing $90, LPG is half the cost at $45 plus 30% extra use for same km traveled. So say $60 for KM traveled, which is a $30 saving. So 100 tanks of fuel to pay back investment of conversion.

Conversion done - vapor injection and 114l fill tank on the tray. I put 90lt of LPG in and it cost $62...normally the numbers are the reverse of this! Initial driving report: what LPG! Frankly I cannot tell when it switches from PULP to LPG, which it does by itself. It starts on PULP and self switches when it is warm enough. It may have slightly less torque as evidenced by acceleration on really steep hills, but it is very tough to tell.

Well done glad to hear you had sucess wit the conversion , you are right about LPG on hills many years back before I switched to VW I had a new Ford panel van XF series converted to gas and the same thing about hills would flick the switch to petrol in hilly areas or it would just go slooooowwwweeerrrr LOL

Oh it goes slower with petrol too! there's no getting away from the fact that more than two tonnes and 85kw are going to struggle on an incline. Now I have to resist the urge to drive harder because the fuel is cheaper!

What engine is yours exactly as my son has a T4 with around 300 thou plus kays on and it pulls like a Mallee Bull he does complain about fuel consumption . But you know what young ones are like they cannot understand that if they drive short trips to shops and back girlfriends etc that economy just goes out the window . In fact my T5 with the 2.0 petrol seems almost lifeless up hills in comparison to his , one particular hill near our home his will sail up in third gear and is still accelerating at the top . Mine has to be paddled furiously , third is useless by half way up and second gets you there but with nothing left under foot .

It has the 2.5l AET engine in a 1996 DOKA (double cab ute). I drove it a bit today. Startup as usual and then 500m down the road the car switches to LPG all by itself and so it continues. Got to the shops and 20 minutes later it starts on petrol and 30 seconds later is on LPG.

i'd be interested in the switch setup if u don't mind devuldgeing the brand or supplier as I only need to collect a few more bits to complete my system before installation. Its interesting to read comments about economy on petrol, I find pulp is definatly less efficant but burns cleaner (longer plug life) , std 91 or 95 ulp I get between 680 to 720klms out of a 80L tank. Mine is a 95-T4-LWB 2.5L Petrol-5 SPD, 16'' 205 & 225 50/55 series tyres. I think I could get a little bit more if I drive a bit more conservatively. That's 50/50 city / highway between Melbourne & Mildura towing my car caddy with a bug. A bit slow at times bit it seems to pull best around the 3 to 4 grand rpm range so maintaining that rpm at about 100 to 110klms seems to work. Can anyone tell me if they have seen a donut style lpg tank mounted where the spare wheel goes as that's what i'm looking at as far as placement so I don't restrict ground clearance in front of the rear axle.

that's pretty good economy towing something, but my engine sits of around 3100rpm at 100kph. Carravells are higher geared. Donut tank was an option for me, but decided against it. They are quite expensive, so ebay for a second hand one?
I'll find out the switch gear for you.

First tank done. 600km of 70% urban and 30 country got 96lt of fuel used. I have been driving harder than I usually would a lot of the time and cruising the rest. It works out to 16l/100km, which is 3lt/100km more than petrol. For some strange reason LPG has just shot up to 90c/lt.

OK, this will likely be the last post in this thread as few seem interested. However I would have appreciated this information so I'll make the record complete.
I have done a few more tank fulls of LPG now. The T4 DOKA gets 15.8l/100km of lpg at 90 cents per liter. In dollar terms filling the LPG tank costs the same as the petrol *used* to cost when 95RON cost $1.56l. In this regards $95 of LPG gets me 670km and $95 of 95RON PULP used to get a range of 450km. So a 33% increase in range per dollar.
