wheels and tyres

I currently run 16 in wheels with 215/65 tyres on my 2006 4motion.
I have seen some stock 17 steelies from a 2013 van with 235/55 tyres.

Will these go straight onto my 2006?

this is probably a silly question, do I need a 17" spare with the same tyre profile or can I use the 16" I have?

I have 2005 4Motion it came with the 17" steels and I wish it came on 16" wheels. The 17" tyres with the correct load rating are expensive and they don't last as the 16" tyres.

The 17" wheels will fit straight to your 2006 4Motion.

This is something that many do not even check. Not only do you have to match the rim size and tyre width and profile, you must also have at least the same load index or rating. This applies to ALL vehicles and not just commercial type vehicles.

Plus you may not exceed the largest stock wheel and tyre diameter by more than 25mm

The 16" and the 17" are factory fit for the T5 4motion. The 17" is 235/55/17 with the minimum 103load rating. There aren't many options with 103 and higher load rating. I'm sure that the OP is aware which size he needs.

I'm currently running Dunlop Sport 01 in 235/55/17 with the 103 load rating, and Ive travelled a little over 32k Km. They're already at the wear indicators front & rear.

I know the VW's seem to be heavier on tyres, but is 32000km normal for anyone? Im in a heavily loaded van, so its not like I'm pulling doughnuts.

Anyway, im in need for new tyres.

What have you used for a commercial van?
What do you like?

My tyre man suggests the continental ($280ea) or nankang ($180ea). What are your thoughts?

My van came with the Michelin Agelis tyres when new. I got 55,0000 km out of that set.
I went cheap with the second set. I bought Nankangs (correct load and speed rated) @ $110 each. I dont think I'll get 55,00 out of them. I have done 25,000 km on them so far. I reckon they will go to 45,000 km.

A work colleague had Dunlops on his van when it was new. They needed changing at 55,000 km. He then put Hankooks on the van. The van is now at 127,000 km, and the tyres don't even look half worn.

Strange isn't it the Chinese made or Korean ones seem to be lasting as good or better than some high priced name brands . 72k is pretty damn impressive .

Not every Korean tyre will last the same. I had Kumho Solus KH17 and they didn't last 20,000km on my 4Motion.
Rotated every 5,000km and pumped to correct pressure 100% of the time. I've even spent $400 on the tyre pressure monitoring system.

I must admit that yes you are right some are good and some not so good , as for tyre pressure monitoring I will admit that I just look at the tyre's and judge if they need air Or if I have long trip like the last week over 1600 kms in one week of work then I will check every one even the spare . One trip in one day was over 700 kays away from home so I did not want any flats etc .
