Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Well, I had a service today, and I suspected a leaking exhaust manifold... yep... $1850 fitted. Then they stripped the sump (at the plug) another $995, came away over $3000 lighter. all this under 150k.
    Makes my Falcon look good.

Does the sump plug get replaced at every service?

If not, I'd be finding out who didn't replace it last, and forwarding the $995 bill to them.

The manifold job sounds dearer than the last one I did back in the dealership days, by a fair margin.

Why didn't they put in a helicoil?

Sounds a bit like you didn't get quotes from several shops for the leaking exhaust.

If the repair shop stripped your sump, I would not pay for anything more than a helicoil insertion.

Even if they replaced the sump, there's not almost $1000 in it.

            Hi Guys.
I did a day ringing around on the manifold. From VW they are quoting around $1000 plus gaskets ( 3 sources). I tried the sump on them, they were the last and second last people to work on it. Helicoils dont work, as they leak along the thread (Yep, I would have thought that's what the washer is for).. Can you tell I'm pissed.

So was a dealer the last who worked on the van ? then they MUST bear the responsibility for stripping the plug sounds like time for some jumping up and down holding your breath until turning blue with legs and arms flaying . No swearing it never works .

Because it is cr*p. I hate when I undo the sump plug and helicoil thread comes out on it.

I wouldn't certainly pay for them to fix their cross threaded sump plug. It's their stuff up and they must deal with it, it's simple like that.
