Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Looking to tap a 12V supply under the dash / Multivan

    HI there,

I am installing a dash cam in my new 2012 Multivan. It was originally installed on my previous 2010 Multivan, and I have managed to run the cable across the top of the dash, under the cover with the handle and into the side plate of the dash that's hidden by the drivers door when shut. It was previously tapped into the loom there but my question is, how do I know which wire to tap into for 12V when the ignition is on only?

I used a multimeter and got 5 volts from the light dimmer but that wont be enough. Any suggestions or colour of cables to look for would be great

Why don't you find a spare fuse in the fusebox. Both my cars have spare slots for fuses.
They have power on one side only and the other is blank.
Just turn the ign on and stick meter into them . When you get power turn the ign off. If its the right one the power will go off If not keep trying You can buy a fuse with a flying lead on it from Jaycar and just put it in. and use that for power and crimp a ring on the earth wire and put it under a screw under the dash Make sure its into metal and not plastic

Here is a pic of mine in the POLO Sorry about focus Bl++dy Iphone

Whilst I can't be exact I fitted a factory cruise control to our 2012 T5 and the power pick up for the cruise was a relay on the drivers side just under the steering column cover it was a bit hard to find at first as the diagram did not make it easy to find but it was there it had a switching 12 volt signal . If no one else comes up with a better option I can pull the bits off and take a photo .Why ? because I threw away the fitting instructions after I finished DOH ! But when I fitted a dash cam to both our vans I just connected the power wire to the blue PCon wire from the head unit stereo system it is used to control an electric aerial and turn on the amplifiers .These are what we use for adding onto circuits they are much more superior than the Jaycar ones as you just plug it in refit the original fuse and fit the one you need for the add on .[IMG][/IMG]

If you pull the passenger's seat out, there's quite a few handy places to tap into.

Thanks for the replies, I think the fuse option looks like a way to go. The guy who fitted it originally just managed to tap into a wire where the cable went in just behind the headlight switch un the dash. Its easy to get in there when you take off the side triangular shaped cover. Guess I can run it to the fusebox easy enough
