The guy who did our rebuild was telling me that most VW dealers in Brisbane were sending their auto boxes to him for rebuilding as just about every other transmission specialist in Brisbane would not even touch them and as I found out , in some cases they only offered to remove the box and send it to Melbourne as someone down there was doing a roaring trade in fast cheap rebuilds , hmmm have to be a bit concerned about that . And as a matter of interest the auto in my old 69 Valiant was the toughest M%%%%er on the planet . I was only 18 at the time and I thrashed that car burnouts wheelies etc and it never hiccuped once , and the best one was I had to remove the auto to replace a welch plug in the back of the block and even after I failed miserably to line up the drive dog in the torque converter and broke off the lugs the bugger still continued to go all you had to do was to keep a few revs up at the lights or it would take time to pump fluid through and you would get an almighty thump as it built up pressure again and that was around 200.000kms { car was stolen a month later and when I got it back the insurance company very sweetly had the toruqe converter fixed ] as they thought the thieves had done it .

If it is the same re-builder that did my mates transmission in Melbourne, he has been doing a good job so far.
Mates T5 died at 135,000km, Van is now at 285,000km, and it is still going strong........and the dealer charged under $7k for everything.

Can you share details of who rebuilder is?

I have no idea......All I know, is that Burwin VW send their transmissions there to get done.
Can try to find out if you like.

There's one in Dandenong I would not recommend
Manuel Automatics in Thomastown did my last rebuild, and so far going well

I had my auto replaced by Burwins under warranty and some 100,000+km later it is performing perfectly well, (touch wood). I never found out where they obtained the replacement so I'll also chase this up and ask them next week.

it's more like a conventional auto box although state of the art. Wonder why the Amarok was deemed better with it while the 4motion T5 uses the dsg box?

And I'm sure we're all wondering what will be in the T6
It would be nice to think this latest round of bad publicity will coerce them to making sure the next iteration works
I said I'm over Multivans, but struggling to find a replacement
2 of the 4 Volkswagens we've owned have had the transmissions fail
What a shame, the rest of the vehicle(s) tend to be very reliable
Gotta say, I'm loving the Subaru CVT transmission
Interesting in your link above, Tornado, they reference that 8 speed ZF in Audi passenger cars
There CVT didn't work for them?

I'd love to know the cost of a dsg over the ZF. I had a very, very quick spin in a BMW with the 8 speed and it kills the dsg for low speed suburban street smoothness.
