Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Help! Rattle in dash

My 2006 AXE-engined T5 Transporter has a buzz in the dash. It happens at a certain rpm and load.

It is very loud and annoying.

I have traced it to the heater or air-conditioning box (behind and below glove box). I wonder if it is the heater or evap cores vibrating within their boxes.

    1) Has anyone had this problem?

    2) Do I have to take the dash out to get to these parts?

    Thanks.

I would ask this question if you turn off the fan does the noise stop as we have had this problem occasionaly in both our vans , turns out that a leaf can get into the system and it will make the noise you describe we found if we turned the fan to full blast it would chew the leaf up and noise gone ! Forgot to mention if you look up under the dash under the glove box there is an access panel for the air con filter remove a few screws and it it will give you some access to the guts of the unit , plus you often find debris inside as well .

sunny 43.5 has it spot on if its when the interior fans running.. if it does it with the fan off, does it do it when you turn off the engine? the N75 valve has a issue that it vibrates. does the vibration after coming off boost and also for about 3 seconds when turning off the engine...some people think the valve noise is inside as its mounted to the firewall...VDUB...

Unfortunately none of those suggestions match the symptoms. It will do it at the same revs at the same load every time, ventilation fan running or not. It sounds like it's coming from inside one of those boxes...

Sounds like you may have to get someone to drive the van while you attempt and I did say attempt to lay down on the floor and have a feel around while moving good luck with the contortionist act though . You can also remove the panel above the radio the one with the card holder just get hold of the holder and pull upwards it will pop off and give you some access to the top area plus if you remove the glove box even more access is then available .

Done all of those things, including radio and glove box removal. Plus centre dash panel, both lower panels. Now you know why I said 'help'!
