Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • 1994 T5 stalls when coming to a halt

Is anyone familiar with this problem?
My 1994 T5 Transporter often stalls as I come to a halt at intersections etc. It seems to happen more when the engine is hot. Going down through the gears to keep the revs up seems to help but not always. Work done so far to try to isolate the problem includes:- New spark plugs, Checked for air leaks, throttle body cleaned, PCV removed and idle air mixture valve cleaned, rotor button and cap cleaned, basic idle setting carried out.
The engine stalls while the van is in gear and the clutch pedal depressed. No problem when changing up the gears, even if I deliberately coast with clutch disengaged.
I am wondering if anyone knows if this is a known problem with this model. I hope someone can help as I live in a country town without VW diagnostic equipment.

You need to clarify your model. If indeed it's a '94 it will be a T4. Also you need to specify your engine type.
Understand how it works, troubleshoot logically BEFORE replacing parts.

Oops! Sorry - it is a 1995 model which I thought was a T5 but recently it was pointed out on another forum that it is a T4 and I have confirmed that by doing a Google picture search.

Is yours a 4 or 5 cyl engine? It may also help if you quote the 3 letter prefix to your engine no. This should be on your rego papers.
I don't have any suggestions for you but there are members on here that are familiar with these petrol engines & hopefully will be along soon.

My 97 petrol T4 did that.
It stopped happening when I replaced the fuel pump
