2.5 R5 engine is 128kw and the 2l is 132kw

    That is not the whole story, early R5 is a terrible engine, lots of quirks and crazy problems. Vw made it for 5 years then quietly dropped it

    A conventional 4 cylinder engine with a belt is far more appealing to me as is the manual element.

    It all comes down to useable power. 400Nm and 4 wheel drive should cover most of my towing needs, plus we can drive straight to Thredbo with no chains

            Looking like a van again. Gary beavering away.

            some wiring progress. Rear lights, front lights and blinkers now working, with some judicious splicing.

            Kneebar and steering column in inside.

            Central locking works on both front and both sliding doors. Just the back to go!

            untold stuff to go back together. Will try to put hubs on tomorrow and bleed brakes so it can go on the floor and we can reclaim the hoist.

              Nice one, that is a great engine, the old PD motor was a good when it was good but you are right a mongrel really, i avoided them like the plague, obviously had to repair a few but was after that few that put me off it. Final straw was the injector bores cracking and filling the sump. It had to go. Great to see this man, im guessing yer man is from the motherland? would have to be. Will be an awesome rig that. Bags a drive when i come down next

                I hope you will come for a drive when down this way Jimmy.

                I agree that Gary does look German in that photo, new haircut, but he is as Aussie as they come. Good bloke and knows his Vws.

                We are all a bit over vans at the workshop at the moment. Have mine strewn everywhere and another 6 in for repairs. Please give us a nice Golf to fix !

                    Tidying up a few loose ends today.

                    Big manly brakes and hubs. These are 20 inch wheels if that gives some perspective!

                    URL=http://s158.photobucket.com/user/matwhi/media/image-27.jpg.html]

                    mounted up propshaft with hangers and shortened piece. Exhaust and heat shield looking the part. Part van part ute part custom.

                    URL=http://s158.photobucket.com/user/matwhi/media/image-26.jpg.html]

                    This is how it looks now. Need to bleed brakes and work out handbrake around the diff and then we can move inside and put the dash in and then drive!

                    URL=http://s158.photobucket.com/user/matwhi/media/image-25.jpg.html]

                    Central locking and lights all work. Sunroof is going to be a casualty but I never use it and interior lights are a bit of a trial. More keen for a test drive than you can imagine!

                          Absolutely no wiring for it in the van. Dunno if I care enough to devote time to making a loom for it.
                          Thanks for the offer though.

                            Just out of interest two questions for you was the sunroof factory or aftermarket . Second question you mention your first coilover was noisy can you elaborate as the one I have just fitted to our T5 has some little sort of tapping sounds like something is loose but should not be as I checked all the tensions on each one . Regards Howard PS it is an FK system adjustable height .

                              Factory sunroof. But we used the entire loom from the ute and it has no provision for the roof and none of the connectors are the same. May have a flash of inspiration and wire it up, but I'm a pale pommy so if it doesn't work, I don't really care.

                              I had some cheapo coil overs before and they made a hollow liquids sound in the front and were bouncey. Fks I have now are much better and make no noise. Did you change your strut mounts when you fitted yours? Is the collar round the bottom of the front shock slid in far enough?

                                Pale Pommy ??? As an ex Pom myself sunroofs are huge in the UK and Europe , you need some sun to change you skin tone . The FK's are giving us a nice ride except for the tapping I will check and see what's going on over the weekend , it does seem to be coming from both sides hmmm. I know they were fully down into the bottom collar as there is the guide at the back which they line up to and there is a sort of hook that engages the top part of the bottom fitting so they should be correctly in place . Which part is the "strut mount" at the very top ?? and did you change the drop links as they needed some serious jacking of the lower control arm once reassembled to get the bolt to line up again . Thanks Howard
