T5 (2006) - Transmission Oil leaked, Control Unit to be replaced

  • T5 (2006) - Transmission Oil leaked, Control Unit to be replaced

    Hello everyone,

    We have a T5 (2006) which we have enjoyed for 110km.
    In the last service, after mentioning problems with the DSG,
    our (local) VW service department has uncovered the following:

    - Seal broke (inside transmission?)
    - (Transmission) Oil leaked through transmission
    - Wiring (harness) and Control Unit are soaked in Oil

    They quote $4095 for material (CU and wiring) and $1800 labor.

    I am a bit at loss, as to whether proceed or not.
    Should I get quotes from other VW service partners as well?

    Also, out T5 (Highline) has been used heavily (4 kids, all boys), so it is not
    in "mint" condition anymore. I planned to drive it for at least two more
    years. Just looking for advice, if to keep, and better look for a replacement.

    Are VW saying the wiring and TCU are "broken/unuseable".Pretty sure trans fluid is non-conductive, so nothing should have shorted out.Why can't they be cleaned up? It's a lot easier for VW to sell you unnecessary new parts if you're the one who's paying.
    I think you should only be up for a seal and labour
    IMO

    edit: also 2006 won't be a DSG

      the gear oil travels down the wiring from the trans into the control unit causing it to function weird.. cant really clean the out. not a lot you can do but replace the ecu and loom with new seal...

          Yes should be a Tiptronic DSG was around 2010 onwards , wait the dealer probably told him it was a DSG . My experience with "Service " reception staff is that they know very little about the variety of specs , we were told by our VW dealer service section that ours T5 2004 had a timing belt DUH its 2.5 gear driven camshaft diesel engine no belt to be found on this one , and twice over a couple of visits they told me it was belt driven .

            the fault i described was for a auto.. dsg would not get this fault as the mechatronics is the ecu and internal in the box so of course coated in oil anyway.. similar issue happens with golf 5 auto and touareg aswell. auto ecu is a external unit like a engine ecu. the autobox leaks through the wiring loom that connects to the box then travels up internally in the loom to the ecu where it fills with oil and causes the issues...

                Won't be a DSG if it's a 2006 model, just a conventional automatic transmission. Moving along...

                Pretty much as VDUB described, it's not common, but it does happen. Have your dealership approach Volkswagen for assistance. The worst they can say is no, but from experience, it's very likely they'll come to the party and help you out to some degree. Better than nothing.

                  Not much chance of VW helping at 110.000 as they will just trot out what they told me you have had your warranty period and after that is all your own responsibility , in simple terms tough s&*)t is what they say .

                    I once saw VW Australia come to the party on an ex-NSW Police T5, that the auto went bang on. The car had done well over 200,000klms, with it's private owner and VW wore the labour on a new exchange transmission.

                    Never say never.

                      Well they refused to help us and ours had only 135.000 kays , even tried to reason with them via emails to Germany I sent them photos of the filter completely blocked and it still did not cut any ice with them .
