How to remove DSG gear knob ?

Wanting to replace the stock leather gear boot with a new custom one , I can get the base part off and the two sides of the actual top with the squeeze button but thats it , any help would be appreciated . It's a 2011 T5 with DSG shifter .

Awesome. This would probably work for me too. I would love the S4 or R8 shifter. Even the Golf R one is nicer than the boring Skoda one. Too much plastic not enough grunt grunt ugh ugh stuff

Okay the job is done whilst the knob is different to the one in photos the principle was similar lucky for me the retainer ring is exactly the same as I use at work so I just cut the old one off and fitted a new one .
