Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • HALDEX - a Manual Override on the Haldex rear drive control unit for off road use

I have; all 4 corner air bag suspension with awesome ground clearance at the touch of a button, - I also added the rear diff lock and front LSD
but would love to have a Manual Override on the Haldex rear drive control unit for off road use, the later models can have an upgrade (race mode) as used for Golf & Audi,

see ( sales@hpamotorsports.com ) but not for my 05 Tdi, " Please can anybody help!"

This gentleman has a very interesting set up in his, what IMO is the most capable T5 in AU and deserves all the support he can get, so please if someone knows or saw what he is after, let him know.

I can't help with your request but I'd love to hear & see more of your off-road airbag & diff lock set up.
I have been considering doing the same to a 4motion Transporter.

Been there, done that. If you have a factory fitted differential lock (or fit a factory unit retrofitted) then the Haldex performance unit will not function (the diff lock feature clashes & you will lose the function).

If you have a regular version, then the Haldex modification we have specifically for the T5, it will indeed bring the rears in earlier. This is a common upgrade on cars in ice country where you can break traction from a standstill (on ice) and go nowhere. We have done quite a few for that purpose

Me too, would give us a head-start if you could tell us about suppliers & prices for air suspension, have done some research but always helpful to know what others have done. Sorry can't help with Haldex, but maybe check South Africans ? they did a switchable coupling for the T3s.

Yeah I would love to know more about who is doing the air suspension.
It would be great to have the ability in a rough terain to jack right up to levels that would cause issues (tyre and joint wear) long term, and the ability to self level when camping!

I'm also looking into retrofitting a locker to the rear diff. Any help where to start would be invaluable!!!

Hi T5 enthusiasts my air bags are triple convolution Boss, the rear are reasonably easy - my set up is similar to the Air bag Man in Brisbane's set up, you will need longer shocks to get more lift, if you have rear drive shafts and get a lot of lift you will need to to fit spacers on the diff carrier sub-frame similar to Seikel's off road set up to prevent possible damage to CV's. The front struts is not easy and it is possible that I may have the only front end conversion in Aussie as I was breaking new ground at the time, though I did't know at the time but have read since that in Germany V W did do a special with air suspension. The rear Diff Lock was done using the factory spare parts that were missing BUT the Crown-wheel carrier will have to be machined having splines cut to take the coupling - also the housing has to have holes machined in it with a CNC machine, expect to operate it only with a manual switch via vacume solinoide valves, On Factory Fitted Vehicles the Computer does the operation ! you only request it via the dash button (it is not an on-off switch)

Just wondering what this would cost?

Is there a way of turning off the whole traction control? I have seen a few youtube videos where the have been able to do this. (not on a VW though). Some simply unplugged a vaccuum sensor on the unit others changed some wiring.

I also found this guy trying to modify the haldex system. Dont know if this would help with just general 4wd driving. 50/50 drive just like a centre diff lock. I didnt read to the end to see if he got it working or not.
Techincal question for any Haldex controller "experts"

Just have to be a bit careful when you go conveting systems designed for very occasional part time AWD to a constant 4WD as the clutches etc are not rated for constant use. There's a fair amount of heat generated and not a lot of cooling - just a word of caution for anyone looking to head down this route to keep an eye on temps.

Yeah i think the guy raises this concern. He is planning to have a switch so its not permanent just when required. I think he also is planning 55/45 drive to allow oil flow.

Guy I sent you a PM about this Mod. After experiencing the rears not kicking in while trying to crawl up a sand dune i'm sure it would be of great benefit.
Please let us all know a little more info. Does it require parts or is it simply a software thing??
                            Cheers
