    Right I,ll start this one as someone had previously suggested . 2005 T5 2.0 litre petrol manual Transporter ticked over the 200.000 mark today . History of van its my work van purchased new to replace good old T4 who went to van heaven . Driven every work day short trips to long ones up to 700 kays and back in a day sometimes , never broken down ever . Disc pads done once {rotors need replacing now } timing belt done 120.000 kays with water pump [Thanks Jmac]. Clutch done late last year not bad 180.000 for the clutch which I have no respect for . Every manual car I have owned has suffered at the hands and feet of my dysfunctional ability to coordinate gear selection with clutch action . Uses about 2 litres oil for around 5000 kays {Not Bad } Nothing has fallen of by itself , the only things that have come off the van have been what I have broken off like 3 mirrors 2 just broken mirror glass and once completely ripped of the door [ lousy judgement ] The occasional things that have been repaired by myself is one only the air blower under dash , brushes resurfaced and the armature cleaned and polished now works perfect again . The old story simple technology is the most reliable cant say the same for wife"s van , this old girl is a great van to drive comfortable for long trips good economy little underpowered compared to diesels but hey it hasn"t let me down .

    Thanks for sharing a very positive report, you are obviously very happy with your van.
    Understand how it works, troubleshoot logically BEFORE replacing parts.

      Petrol reliability.

      Thanks for that Sunny 43.5.... I have to back you up with the reliability of the "old technology" being a 2.0 litre petrol.
      I am on my 2nd T5 petrol (2005 and 2009 ) and both vans have been excellent. I only keep them for 4 years though , so I don't get up to your milage. I replace at about 100 k's.
      Unfortunately , Vw decided in their wisdom,to stop bringing in the 2.0 L petrol ,so I have no choice but to go diesel this time, in June.
      That means that I pay $4500 more for diesel ,and as I get 10.2Litres per 100 ks, will never get my money back in 4 years .
      I just hope that the diesel is as reliable........I know it's noiser, but I'll just have to put up with that too.

        Thanks guys yes its a shame that they even dropped the 2.5 petrol that powered the T4 , but in saying that in Europe they do have a petrol 2 litre Turbo specs and prices here

        The T5's petrol engine range has also been expanded and now includes the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder TSI petrol producing an output of 148Hp (150PS) and peak torque of 280Nm (206 lb-ft) coupled to a six-speed manual gearbox driving the front wheels.

        With this engine, the Transporter van can go from zero to 100km/h (62mph) in 11 seconds (Multivan 12.5 seconds) and top out at 180km/h (112mph), while returning an average fuel economy of 9.5lt/100km (24.8mpg US or 29.8mpg UK) and CO2 emissions of 222g/km.

        In Germany, prices for the Transporter panel van with 2.0 TDI BlueMotion Technology start at €27,450, and with the 2.0 TSI from €25,445.

          But will we ever see them out here ... we are such second rate citizens in oz when it comes to available models in this country

            I know that the performance of the TSI petrol is great, but I would not think that adding a turbo and a supercharger ,would
            do anything to aid reliability. I look at it as just 2 more things to go wrong. That is the beauty of the old T5 2.0 L petrol

              I think just simple turbo would help a lot , even from day one I quickly realized the "New Technology " 2 litre was no where near the old 2.5 which is the line the salesman spun when I asked about a 2.5 petrol . He said the new engine would match the performance of the old one what he forgot to mention was that VW lowered the drive ratios giving what seemed like better performance but it was at the expense of revs 2.5 @100 kmh 3000 rpm give or take a bit the 2.0 @100kmh 3400 rpm big difference . But its still going which is the main thing albeit a little bit slower these days .

                Mines a 2001 and still hasn't hit 200K...though it will shortly. Only probs have been the ignition switch and air con compressor. Other than that...normal maintenance. Still has original clutch and the second set of front pads...seen a few sets of tyres though.

                  Reliability at high Ks. Has any one done comparisons of the usual problems comparing which Country they were built in ? Do the best ones come out of Germany? what about South America - Africa - or Eastern Europe? it would make for some interesting statistics,

                    From memory, all of the T5 Transporters we get come out of Poland while the T5 Multivans et al. come from Hanover, Germany.

                    My own T4 though is a Hanover build according to the data sheet

                      Im thinking of getting the same van in the 2 litre petrol. How's yours still running? I can't find many reviews on the petrol but the ones I've found are like yours.....not a bad word to say!

                      any advice would be greatly recieved

                        The 2L petrol motor is fundamentally a MK4 2L Golf motor. Basic design, that goes forever. Plenty of MK4 Golfs out there with 300,000km+ on them. No reason why a Transporter won't do it.

                          Hi Gidge as Umai has explained [ I did not know the history of the 2.0 motor before now but now I do ] but anyway mine has now clicked over 225000 kays and still going , had Jmac service and do the obligatory timing belt and waterpump back in December last year . I now have to look at some front end components as Jmac explained the camber bushes had split so now is a good time for me to do as many front end bits as I can . I don't plan on selling the old girl will just keep it going , as Jmac said if and when the engine dies I will just get it rebuilt as the van itself is solid and it would not attract much as a trade anyway .
