Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • T4 air conditioning - Denso?

I've read online that VW T4 airconditioning was Denso stuff...is this true? It looks like bosch.

Mine was a Denso...it isn't now. Well the compressor isn't!

Caravelles were the only ones with factory air , all T4s were locally fitten with Nippondenso units

I can't confirm that the Caravelles had factory air but can that the transporters have Nippondenso air using Sanden compressors as Bug_racer has said.
Understand how it works, troubleshoot logically BEFORE replacing parts.

what are the usual problems with the system? The airconditioning in my double cab does not work at all.

I would presume you have checked all electrical details if you have the engine on you should hear a discernible click and a slight change of engine revs as the compressor kicks in .If this was the case what about the gas level has that been checked , just some ideas .

Gas pressure is the first place I would look. I have been told the compressor wont activate if there isn't enough gas.

Make sure the fans work , preferably both of them , they should come on as soon as you turn the interior fan on .
Then Id look at re-gassing and checking to see if the compressor still works

Another thing these were bad for is drive belt tensioners seizing up .

Racemag, I know a lot of us like to do things ourselves, but if you need someone to cast an expert eye over it and save you a lot of time, John at Volkshome in Thomastown is brilliant
Not certain if that's anywhere near you

sorry, not really close as I'm 20km out SE side of Melb.
I've checked turning on off - no loss of revs and no compressor tuning on. Switch is functioning. Relays do not seem to match those elsewhere, so not completely sure if right relay is in place. All relays removed from wrecked cars in wreckers. Which relays need to be in place in Australian cars?

You guys are right it was a Sanden....and I was wrong it is still a Sanden! Just a new one...seals blew out in the old one and it wasn't worth the rebuild...

well I've put 3,000km under the tyres of the T4 now and if I could change one thing it would be to get the aircond working. Damn it's been HOT with two weeks of 35C days and the drive after racing from phillip island to home was noisy with the window open.
So VW service place or airconditioning service place?
