  • Caravelle seats in my Transporter.

    Hi,
    I'm new here and happy to be a part of this forum.

    I recently bought some seats out of a caravelle off ebay. I am on the Gold Coast and the seats were in Sydney so I couldn't check the compatibility but they were super cheap and I bought them straight away. I got the 2 and 3 seater, the single seater had been sold before I got to them. I got everything for $150.

    I have since realised that my van doesn't have the fixed mounting points that would have been in the van that these came out of. My preference is to have 3 seats across the middle and leave the rear of the van empty so we can have the pram/bikes etc in there.

    My problem is that the mounting points for the 3 seater dont line up with the support rails under the floor.

    I looked at my friends caravelle and saw that the fixings that the mounts screw into slot into these rails, a relatively simple thing for me to setup.

    If I am to install the 3 seater in the centre I will have to make up mounting reinforcements under the floor and also mount the brackets that the top of the seat to the pillars where they aren't suposed to go. After that I'm not even sure what the requirements are regarding compliance for NSW registration.

    What is my best move??

    Try to install the 3 seater in the centre position, or try and find a single seat so I can have 3 across the middle.

    Does anyone have a single caravelle seat they have for sale or would like to trade for my 3 seater?

    Any other thoughts on what my best options are would be great.

    Thanks.

    Here are the pictures of all the stuff that I got with the purchase.

    (Im looking to convert what was my work van into our family vehicle so if you know of anyone selling interior stuff that will make this a bit nicer let me know. I already have a window for the drivers side)

    (Pics are linked to another post I did on the uk t4forum)

    I used to own a business on the Gold Coast 12 years ago and this is what we used to do all the time , now I have been out of the industry now since then but its all still in the head . Several things very important Yes NSW will require an engineers report as the classification of the vans use will change from commercial to light passenger I am not sure from memory but your van will probably be NA and needs to be changed to either MA or MB there will be a requirement to fit ADR approved Child restraints as the vehicle goes from Goods carrying to Passenger so the safety standards are more stringent . Plus and this is important Seat belts in my time we were not allowed to use second hand seat belts as their history could not be checked [seat belts could have gone through and accident and they would have lost their designed stretch allowance ] . As for floor anchorages if the seats are mounted without seat belts attached then the mounting plates and bolts are not as large . seat belts have different size bolts etc . To be quite safe it would be best to get some help from someone who does this work NSW RTA should have a list of Approved fitment places . Their are some shops on the Coast who can help Safe T Ride at Southport would be the best around {David the owner used to be my foreman }

    Good luck and remember this will not be cheap process as the certification for NSW is done by an engineer and they can charge several hundreds just for the certificate . Sorry its not all good news but the results of bad installations can be fatal . Regards Howard PS they are also Motor Trimmers and can do the interior trim for you if desired this is one I did for a mate last year no seats .http://www.vwwatercooled.com/forums/...iet-76781.html
