Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Local VW Dealer quotes me $170.25 for a key to my 2003 Transporter T4.
Seems its just a plain key with a chip reading copying not permitted or words to that effect. Anyone know a cheaper way? Seems you have to provide the vin to get one. Any known VW dealers in say Germany who do it cheaper?

We changed the whole engine in my sons T4 and had a problem with non start Jmac told us it was the key being the wrong code as the engine was different ECU to the old one . So VW wanted $80plus to change the code , left there walked into local shopping centre and the lovely MR Minit man scanned the old key and transferred the code to the key we needed presto problem solved and he didn,t charge me a cent for it . So I went back next day and manged to get him to take $20 for 30 seconds of work .

The dealer needs your VIN to order the correct key with the right transponder in it, plus the key will come pre-cut.

Did that price include programming to the car?

That price was for a key to be cut in Germany matching my VIN number; shipped here and "ready to go". Assumed that would have been matched to my individual vehicle?
I have 1 original (I presume) VW key (VW emblem on black plastic) and on one side of the key is pressed "WTO" and the other side
"W3". Maybe I should visit the local Mr Minit guy at the shopping centre instead of the local big locksmith as I did?
        Thanks for the tip.

The key would be cut to suit, but not programmed to the car's immobiliser.

Okay if you have one original then you could try the Mr Minit man as they do have codeable keys not sure of price .

I have been through this a couple of times with my wife's Polo. Most locksmiths said they couldn't do it & the other ones said they could try but it doesn't always work particularly for the ones on Ebay. The key for the Polo has the "ski slope" cut on both sides that only a few could cut & if the programe didn't work it was money down the drain. The T4 has a different profile so this info may not apply.

Understand how it works, troubleshoot logically BEFORE replacing parts.
