Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Dash Instrument Panel Blanking Out -

Ok... Sat morning.. I drove off and then the middle LCD display went off and the RPM and Speedo locked at 40Ks an hour and 4000 rpm. I tapped the clear plastic cover and it all came back but one warning stayed on- one relating to ESP. I had no speedo etc until it came back

Today... the the van failed to start - like the battery was flat but isn't. Again the the screen and display went blank again,

Locked the van ... went inside the grab the wife to mention our newest issue.... turned the key and it started. The screen
then came back with a text message saying "Kein Schedules Sel". It then went back to normal. Any thoughts?

    Outside another fricking dealer visit.

Thanks it just my warped sense of humour !! But I do hope the guys who are wiser and more knowlegable than myself on this forum DO give you some answers as there is a huge pool of talent out there who have enlightend me over the years via the forum . So its over to you the team of tech savvy VW boffins out there . And before I am accused of being derogatry here is the meaning .A boffin is a stock character in United Kingdom culture: a scientist, engineer, or other person engaged in technical or scientific research.

had one of these in the other week towed in the dash cluster was going blank was starting and cutting out due to the imobillzer not being deactivated because no power to the dash. wasnt faulting at first and made it very hard to work out what was wrong but luckly failed and stayed like that found that the power supply was dropping outto the dash ended up giving it another terminal 15 power supply from another circuit the wiring diagrams didnt match what was in the vehichle we suspected a relay but couldnt find it in the vehichle

The system logged the fault - so they could see it - full cluster replacement. They dont know if the shorting has caused issues elsewhere. All keys have to re-coded to the new cluster as well.

It died Saturday in the driveway... not really the sight I wanted to see - the Caravelle on a trayback to the dealer. A family of 8 fitting into a 5 seater sedan - hmm tight fit.

From an electrical point of view, a short is extremely unlikely as it would just blow a fuse and stop working permanently. A more likely scenerio is that something that supplies power to the cluster is going open curcuit intermittantly. I once had a problem with the blinkers and electric windows and air-con intermittantly stop working, and the fault never reoccurred simply by moving, or reseating as I call it, all the fuses and relays in the fuse box that in hidden under the battery holder shelf in the motor compartment.

Cluster is being replaced - all keys will re-coded and all the other warranty jobs nailed in the same run.

Ah, so it's not replaced yet, hope it fixes the fault.
