  • DSG Multivan versus 4motion transporter manual

    Hi all,

At the moment i drive a 2010 Multivan (MY11 103 DSG). I mostly use the car as a camper (started an earlier thread on this) and am not really using any of the seats etc. I have been thinking that a 4 motion van might be nice but am a bit worried about a dsg 4 motion set up.
I have come across a 4 motion transporter ( 5 cyl man) which looks ok, it would make a better base for a conversion I think.
What are the opinions here on the 5 cylinder engine? The car is obviously older than mine and I would gain a bit of money when I sell mine , but that would come in handy for a conversion......
Anything to look for in 2005 T5's ??

    Thanks

The 5 cylinder engine is OK as long as it was maintained properly. Watch out for the power steering fluid contaminated with the engine oil, since it's expensive fix. Cracked exhaused manifolds and leaking water pumps are something to watch out for as well, when you're buying secondhand T5 with the R5 engine.

I have the Highline 4Motion. Check the power side doors. Both of mine have failed. One cost $1600 and the other $1200 to replace.

Just a short one and please I am only repeating what was reported in the Motoring section in the papers "Quote" VW admitted that the DSG doesn,t work too well in off road situations because the clutches slip too much causing the box to overheat and cause damage . End "Quote" . This may not relate to the 4 motion but it does show that VW admit in some circumstances these technological things don't always work out as this was their response to the Amarok not having an auto when first released .

we have a 4motion 128kw TDi multivan with a manual gearbox and I agree that the DSG gearbox doesn't really make much sense in an off road situation. you need to be able to control your own clutch and revs off road.

Thanks for the replies, in the end I decided not to go ahead with the 4motion. As my job situation has changed I have had to go back to a pick up.

Let alone the shortcomings of the DSG in off-road applications, I find it a pain in the a**e in traffic when looking to zip into an available space in traffic situations such as roundabouts or intersections which don't have traffic lights. Potentially b****y dangerous. Repeated bleatings to VW service have made no difference at all. It's a technological disgrace.

You hit the nail right on the head Greymad I too have some misgivings about the DSG mine has twice decided not to engage forward after backing out of driveway and I hate the way it holds a gear downhill , I have sort of got used to the lag at take off it comes down to predicting when the lights are about to change take foot off brake and allow it to just start to creep then off you go [wife still can't get it right ] she still has the lurch down pat Ha Ha .
