Off to Vw tommorow wifes van has developed a top of motor rattle I am guessing hopefully an injector might be the cause , but as its a VW the outcome is probably going to be something more insideous , plus they are going to diagnose the auto for a report to VW , I will update tommorow arvo if the typing is blurred it will be the tears of pain for the bill .

Update time , dealer rang to ask permission to remove top cover to inspect as new gaskets will be needed , then rings back to ask how far I want to go as they suspect camshaft problems bearings or something else price $5 - $6000 aaaaargh , I tell him that I have no option but to repair as its is not going to fix itself !!, then he adds oh the turbo appears to have an oil leak and they havent even looked at the transmission yet S*&^t . Isn,t it wonderful I spent sub $30000 to buy my 2.0 lt manual petrol T5 and other than schedule timing belt with waterpump done at 100000 kays and then just recently clutch at 185000 kays brake pads as well thats it . Well over $50000 for the T5 diesel 128 and look at the track record water pump fails at around 60,000 kays side door falls off its rollers diesel fuel cooler holed because of silly location the transmission has played up for the last few years and now the engine has s&^#t itself , just wonderful isnt it . can,t wait till tommorow to see if I should go and pick up the van and push it over a cliff . Written off might be an option hmmmmm , add it up maybe $6000 for repairs plus a tranny maybe $7000 around $13000 to $15000 for a van probably worth $15000 to $20000 NOT HAPPY JANLast edited by Sunny43.5; 30-07-2012, 07:24 PM.

How many km on the clock?
I hope it won't be the valve train.
Just in case you've missed this thread on TDIClub http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=237678
please note, just in the very first post there, many people most likely didn't use VW506.01 oil and most likely changed the oil evey 15,000km or even longer. I've found that discussion there many years ago and didn't read it all, but the cam lobes (valve train) failure can take a long time to show the symptoms and it also depends how you people drive and maintain their van. The noisy engine is tell tail sign that there is abnormal wear from within the camshaft area and you could have that noise for 80,000km or even more before something happen.
I don't think it's 100% VW fault, (sure they could've recall these with the engines, which camshaft didn't get the right surface treatment) they've specified the oil that should be used, they could also shorten the oil change intervals, the 2004 made T5s were on 2years or 50,000km oil change interval.
Mine is a very quiet engine, compared to many other T5 5cyl. engines that I have serviced. The importance of VW approved 506.01 ... (not trying to be mean or something, just seeing it from a different perspective). I change my oil every 7,500km or 6months whichever comes first.
If you've had your van serviced at the dealer or even at the same independent workshop for 100% of the time, I would be pushing for some kind of goodwill. Especially if you've done just a bit over 100,000km and was always on time for the service.
These engines should be good for +500,000km.
Haven't said all that, don't jump to any conclusions before you hear from the dealer and hope for the best.Last edited by Transporter; 30-07-2012, 10:48 PM.Performance Tunes from $850Wrecking RS OCTAVIA 2 Link

Thanks for the info but it seems that I may be victim to the line spun to us by VW dealers where they tell you service intervals are VW recommendations and obviously if you are not very mechanicly minded in these matters then it seems we have to cop what happens as a result of their directions . I can only wait and see what tommorow brings .

Thanks Jim I suppose because our model is the gear driven cam as you originaly told me a couple of years ago the idle noise is always a mettalic rattle so any increase in noise caused by gradual wear would not seem unusual until failure . What made me laugh and see red this morning when I dropped it off the service guy came out to listen to the noise and declared ? have you had the timing belt changed , I just could not resist telling him that he obviously did not know much about these vans and explained the gear drive system , another guy stuck his head through the door and said but there are two models as if to justify their advisors lack of knowledge .

Well some good news not confirmed as the service advisor had gone home early but apprently the cam is all good the noise as it turns out was the bearing in the aircon compressor it has also broken the mount , amazingly the service guy said that they removed the top cover as the noise sounded like it was inside I also heard the noise when I took of the oil filler cap but all is not as it first seemed . So some faith has been restored will update again Wednesday .

That's a good news,
at least they've checked the cam lobes, so you've got some assurance, that the engine should last a bit longer. How many kms have you done?Performance Tunes from $850Wrecking RS OCTAVIA 2 Link

I've worked on a t5 maxi taxi and it had over 500000 on it, it did have flat lobes but no shame to it though.
Glad yours is in good health

Update time again got van back today yippee rattle gone from engineaircon compressor replaced , service done to AT software update done , fluid flush and renewed
, drove home 5 kays and it was back to same problem seemed worse than before
4 times it slipped at intersection "bastard" had to stop and restart right in middle of road drove off fine 300 metres along at lights does it again then twice more driving up hill to home and then it slipped going along our driveway !!! . It seems that its fine whilst driving normaly as soon as you lift off accelerator as you stop or slow down when power is reapplied it slips again . Restart fixes problem I just dont get that part . Any way VW man told me that they were approaching VW for new valve bodies , that was at dealership . When I got home I rang him and told him that when he talks to VW tell them not to bother with valve bodies I want a new tranny as its even worse than before it went in . When I picked it up he tells me that the turbo is leaking oil somewhere so I ask what new seals to sort leak oh no he says new turbo , another $2500 on top of the $3680.20 I already spent on the other stuff , I will now play the wait and see with VW , I was happy when he told me that the service was done on the AT only to be crushed when the mongrel slipped like it was on ice . Will keep you updated with further news .

Mate, valve body doesnt fix it, if it gets a new valve body itll be ok for around 6 mnths then be same again. The trans makes metal that stuffs the valve body so itll need an overhaul with the valve body. Only my opinion, but seen it many times, you have the 09K trans and its the big brother of the 09G in the Gokf, Beetle, Polo, Jetta etc, all do the exact same. The original valve body gets reamed out and re sleeved with the fix and an overhaul is the go. Only going on what ive seen ( plenty) , but you have to play with the rules i suppose, just my opinion, reason i have confidence is i do a fair bit of work with trans shops and i take more than just a look when the trannys are apart.
Hope im wrong

Just went for a 50kay run around the bayside hills and flat sections was all good until turned a corner and back came the thumps now after service its doing it in third as well as the 4th to 5th etc , what was real bizarre it seems under heavy acceleration that it skips 5th gear goes from 4th straight to 6 th . then about a kay from home more short runs with corners slips again then goes okay until turn into our street with an uphilll climb and it goes full slip mode . The question why turning it of and on fixes it I just don,t see the correlation of turning the car off and on to stop it slipping , I,ll just wait for a response from VW , but as I have said all along they would not service it 3 years ago now they have and its worse .

Further update as we had a weekend booked for weeks up at Stanthorpe no bloody auto was going to spoil our weekend at the wineries etc . It all was fine until near Ipswich at the Cunningham merge slips again 3 times in short distance as I have said I do not understand how just turning it off and on sorts it out really bizarre . Onwards we went all good whilst at highway speeds even went up Cunninghams gap withut to much fuss just seemed erratic on which gear it wanted to use , all good to Warwick and on to Stanthorpe . Played up slipping etc Saturday a few times and then was fine for rest of day Sunday morning did it a couple of times but always when slowing down to either stop or turn corners etc once up to highway speed it seemed fine . I will give VW till tommorrow to reply and then start jumping up and down . Whilst I can do the neutral shift turn off and on real fast the wife cannot and is now scared to drive it .
