  • Transmission rebuilders T5 Brisbane

    Ok I am about to admit defeat the Six Speed Trioptronic is about to take its last gasp of life . The last couple of days it is hit miss you drive somewhere and it is spot on the next moment its slipping and thumping madly , my question for Queenslanders has any one had theirs rebuilt in the Brisbane area and what did it cost and how was the job handled IE any better components fitted etc . Regards Howard . PS I am still going to give VW AU a serve .

    What happens if you only drive it in S mode out of interest?

      Sunny, can't remember what remediation actions you took with VW in other threads, but have you approached them for an out of warranty goodwill claim? You will recall i recently had success and secured a 50% claim, with the other 50% being covered under used car warranty. FYI, the replacement gearbox from VW was $11k.

        It is the same regardless of selection , yesterday drove 5 kays to the hardware all good no problems return trip I get to the bottom of the road that goes up along steep hill to our street and had to turn down a side street as the thing was slipping in all modes just no drive revs and little forward movement . Any way decide to get up the hill from a different street all good down the hill and along to another road then turn into our street with sudden steep climb from a sharp turn and instantly it slips tried all modes a no go . Turn off van restart and and up she goes with no slip Idon,t know this thing has me beat . My son borrowed the van last week to go to a concert and he had to turn it off and on about a dozen times on the way to the concert , the trip home and it goes perfectly . It has as previously posted been thumping from 4th to 5th and the same when slowing it can be reduced using manual mode but it still gives some thumps .

          Hi Bluefin what sort of kays on yours at failure ? I was also told 3 years or so ago it was $7000 for a box no mention of labour . Also was the $11000 including deposit as this is aVW procedure for parts . Replaced clutch plate and pressure plate in my manual T5 recently and had to cough up $57 deposit which was refunded when I returned the old parts which I already own when I bought the van new , they should pay us for the retuned parts as they are ours !!!!

            failed with 60k. No idea if the $11k included a deposit as the non-vw dealer i purchased from took care of all the proceedings.

              Try Qld Automatic Transmission Service at Geebung, I had them replace the trans fluid as a preventative, he has rebuilt a few and tries replacing some internal parts before committing to a full rebuild, give him a call 3265 6038 they are very helpful.

                Thanks Guv I am contacting VW as well before I commit as I don,t feel confident with them as they have continuously changed their stance on the auto service schedules . It has left a bad taste after having owned now 5 VW vans over the last 12 years and by far this one which was the most most expensive has been the most costly in repairs etc . I have recently changed the clutch kit in my work van T5 2.o lt and I have to say I am no saint with manuals but at least I got 50.000 more kays from the manual than the auto my wife drives . Personally 130000 kays is not very good for a $50.000 plus van and as Bluefin says his died at 60.000 what does that tell you . If VW were monitoring this forum they should step and admit that there is a problem . Take a look at forum members who are having ongoing problems with their DSG autos VW seem to be stumbling from one disasterous auto to another now the whisper is that the next one is going to be an 8 speed . Please VW try and keep it simple .

                  Hm, it's telling me that the internet connects people with the same problems or the same interest.

                  There are 2 people who bought the VW Tiguan 2years ago, living no more than 300m from me. I had the problem with the A/C couple month after I bought the Tig. I'm on VWwatercooled and they never heard about our forum, further more their Tigs are faultless.

                  I'm sure that there are many that have problems with the A/T in T5's, but there would also be many that had no problems. I believe in that there are people who buy the most reliable car in the world and they have nothing but the problems with them. We bought Subaru Forester 13 years ago based on the previous Subaru experience and the reliability record of the brand. And surprise, surprise, we replaced ignition coil pack at 12,000km, the rear wheel bearing at 50,000km and 117,000km also had the oil pump seal leaking into the timing belt area that I had to fix at 60,000km. Would I buy the same Forester again with the diesel engine and A/T (if existed), of course I would. To me it was still very reliable car, never left me stranded.

                    Couldn,t agree more , I have owned a variety of cars over the last 40 odd years with varying degrees of love hate. my very first "brand new" car was a 1982 929 Mazda hardtop . Fabulous car great styling and features it was only a shame Mazda did not bring out the rotary version which would have matched its looks . Then a Mazda 626 also great car .Then two Fords for work use both had dud engines both had to be rebuilt within the first 5,000 kays bad oil consumption 1 litre each 1000 kays . Next a 2 door Opel built Holden Barina 1.2 litre engine what a great bloody car 4 years over 120.000 kays and spent only $75 replacing heater hose junction unit that started to leak the day I sold it , other than normal servicing thats all that it cost, and what was amazing I bought the car new for $13500 and sold it for $10,000 . In amongst that a Mitshubishi Verada Xi great performance V6 pity about a lousy chassis was terrible cornering on the open highway wallowed like the old cars from the US in the sixties Valiants and Falcons etc a short affair with a Holden Astra another Opel built car also fab to drive and then VW,s .
                    My first a 97 2.5 petrol manual T4 I just loved this first VW except for a dodgy relay plenty of go for a one tonner . Nearly cried the day I killed it 7 years later , semi trailer won VW lost . So on to a T5 by know we had sold our 2000 VW and bought the T5 128 diesel turbo for our family use , I bought the T5 2.0 lt for work use to replace the T4 I destroyed a bit underpowered but simplisitic in that its a manual . And now we are at todays dillema the most expensive car we have ever bought and a sour taste after such a short number of kays compared to all the others , water pump and service $1400 /sliding door falls off rollers collapsed/ intercooler hose kept blowing off / diesel fuel cooler on underside punctured because of bad location / now lets see what the tranny costs HMMMMMMMM

                      Interesting question...are VW monitoring this forum? Who knows, quite possibly. What I do know is that they ought to be. Word of mouth goes a LONG way. I love my van, and if any one asks about I'm happy to tell them about it. There are two families at my sons school who are both interested in getting Multivans. I rave about how versatile a vehicle it is, how good it drives etc but then I have to tell them about VW's crappy sealed for life transmission. They give me the strangest look of "WTF?" Yep I know, great car but due to their (VW's) service requirements the end user is stuck with a repair bill for thousands of $. What have both these families decided to do? Ones a Vet and is looking at the Mercedes options and the other is a well payed coal miner and he is looking at the Hyundais now. Basically VW has lost 2 sales due to word of mouth. Yeah I know, DSG in the new vans but still there is now a negative reputation they have earn't by shafting existing owners.

                        The Mercedes A/T could as bad. We had the 2005 Jeep Cherokee 2.8CRD that had MB 5 speed auto and it was the reason while we stopped driving it the day the 3years warranty run out and were sharing one car between 2 family members for a months untill the Touareg was delivered. Just about every brand that used that MB a/t had the problems with it and it wasn't filled with the oil for life.

                          My daughter just traded in a 4 year old Merc 200B because the auto started to bunny hop as she called it and the dealers wanted $1800 to service it before they could say what was wrong and if it would cost more to repair. My 2002 RAV4 had a sealed for life auto as well, luckily it did not fail while I owned it but I believe there was a class action against Toyota in the US due to massive amount of failures.

                          I don't think people should single out VW over this, it is a sign of the times and is happening to all makers because they all source their autos from just a few manufacturers.

                          My 2006 kombi beach auto has done 140,000km and still functions as the day it was bought, so they are not all failing prematurely. Hopefully it will do a lot more km yet.

                          For the original poster of this thread, I know that the owner of German Autos at Geebung in Brisbane has repaired a transporter that he owns by resleeving the actuator cylinder for one of the gears in his auto. It could be worth giving him a call to see what he thinks.

                            I spent this morning doing some investigation into the rebuild situation , one place knew about the T5 triptronic problem with out prompting . Resleeving was one of the options he suggested along with new valve bodies from the US , unfortunatley as is the case he warned me off another repairer as he claimed they sent the boxes to Vic and the repair done there was dodgy "his words" . Now I have booked the van into a VW dealer for assesment and report which will be sent to VW for their consideration . As a matter of interest this guy was fairly knowlegble but his approx quote of between $14000 and $16000 plus labour stopped me dead the van is probably not worth that anymore , as my wife pointed out a repair was nearly half what the van was worth when new .Stay Tuned

                              Hi Sunny, what was the outcome for this - do you have any specialists you can recommend. I have a Multivan that is doing rough changes after the engine is hot and occasionally sticking in gear (usually 3rd). It's done about 170,000kms.
