The dealer told me that no fault codes were registered when the van went back for the intercooler hose and A/T replacement. I know what response i will get when i take it back... "sorry, we were unable to replicate the fault".

Might be a long shot, but perhaps software updates weren't applied after the replacement box went in?

If its like some of the cars I come accross these days its probably the computer that has now decided to not play along with the new transmission . I find some of the new cars if you replace even something as simple a sunroof motor {as I discovered} the car refused to talk to the new motor until the car was put onto a dealer computer and then told to play fair with the new component . I do miss the good old days !

I'm assuming the battery would have been disconnected for an extended period whilst the box was replaced, effectively resetting the ECU. Is it worthwhile resetting the transmission control module and ECU? If i disconnect the battery and press the brake pedal for 20-30 seconds to get rid of any residual charge, will this reset the ECU?

Yep, i've already got the link to reset the TCM. I also wanted to reset the ECU at the same time, which is why i was asking about the battery disconnect.

Good news, i took the van back to the dealer to diagnose the erratic gearbox downshift, and whilst they were unable to replicate the fault or find any fault codes, they did locate a tech bulletin which describes the exact same issue and were able to apply a fix in the form of a software update.

Whilst i'm hugely disappointed with the premature failure of the gearbox and the lack of explanation from VW Australia, i have nothing but praise for the local dealership who has been very helpful and accommodating through the whole process.

On a side note, is there an online repository of all tech bulletins?
