2006 T5 2.5 TDi Transporter purchase advice.

Hi guys,

I`m looking at purchasing a 2006 lowroof T5 2.5 TDi Transporter, 6 speed auto with 86000kms, factory 9 seater, dual aircon for 25K

This will be our first VW - it ticks all our boxes being diesel, rear seats, auto, white, low kms. We have kids so it will be the wife`s shopping trolley weekdays & a tourer/dirt bike carrier/surf tripper come weekends.

When doing some research I`m not really sure what model the 9 seaters are as it appears there are a lot of varying seating capacities/model names. When studying the forum & it`s come up that the auto`s are the main potential problem along with waterpumps on the T5`s. Guys have mentioned that if the auto`s are serviced by someone who is in the know they are reliable.

Would like feedback as to opinions/experiences on these particular vans & if the auto`s are worth steering clear of.

There is more documented trouble with the dual mass flywheel of the manual gearbox system, but it is probably less expensive to repair when it breaks which seems to be quite often. We have a 2006 AUTO that's done 125,000km and its still working fine.

Water pumps are a weak point, and the archilles heel of the engine as they often let water into the sump, which can kill the engine. Ours started losing a small amount of water over a 15,000km service cycle, at about 80,000km, so we got it replaced for about $300 and now I can sleep at night. Like most things it should be a matter of sensible maintenance, and not letting things get out of hand and doing more damage when they are on the way out.

where on earth did you get a water pump for $300? mine was $1600 when it went. it was in warranty period too but still had to pay.

86000 km is good, just get it serviced and get the auto flushed. I sold my 05 with 165,000km on it. I had the auto flushed and the water pump done.


$$$1600 WTF??? was anything else done?

From memory mine was in the $300-$400 range for a genuine pump.

German Autos at Geebung on the northside of Brisbane, just dug out the receipt, it was $288 for the pump and $100 to fit, so to be more accurate it was $388.

The dealers are scary aren't they.

WTF yes I agree VW charged me $1400 just for a water pump when I questioned them at the day it was booked they said that the engine had to be removed to do the job . Now they rang me at 4pm same day and said it was ready all I can say is these guys must be bloody good because to remove a whole engine gearbox etc regas the air etc and replace the pump in roughly 7hrs . I did not question them as you would expect that this is what they have done , I have since seen that the pump can be changed without removing the whole thing so you like myself may have been taken for a VW ride !!

i have been taken for a huge vw ride that lasted for 7 years and the ride is so big now i feel dizzy.

how much did you get for yours when you sold it. ive been trying to sell mine for a couple of weeks now and thinking its gotta go to wreckers for a $100.
