  • T5.2 pro-vent install (alternate bracket position)

Hi folks. Whilst I am going about the install I figured I might as well document it, particularly as I have mounted in a different spot to transporter, and my van has a slightly different engine cover. I haven't finished it yet, waiting for the bracket paint to dry and will finish the install tomorrow with the final few pics.

This is the position I chose, between the headlight rubber cover and air filter box. Its a pretty tight squeeze with just a few mill each side. You can see the rubber needs to get squished inwards for it to fit. One reason I chose it is so that I have two bracket screws so it's hopefully fairly stable.

Hers it is with bracket installed. I'm a little worried it may resonate forward and back, but i'll see how it goes with the hoses installed. There is a screw at the top of the firewall that looks like it would be a good point if i need to mount a small brace anyway.

As you can see, only about 3mm between the pro-vent and aircleaner box. I'll probably stick some high density foam in between the two to make sure they don't wear on each other.

Plenty of room under the hood.

Its about level with the washer bottle, or whatever it is there. (Heh, still finding my way around this engine. I've never been so confused as to what is what with a car before )

The bracket is just 30x3mm galv strap. Some blacksmithing was required, and it can be a bit fiddly getting the bends and twists right and straight, but the only tools required where a vice, blowtorch and hammer plus a big shifter for the twists.

Oh, plus an angle grinder to notch out the corner where there is a bit of a lip on the bit of metal around the screws.

Will finish off tomorrow and see how it all comes together with the hoses.

Just as a side note, I pulled the hose off the cover to see how the hose install will go, and it was very wet inside with oil, so i'm pretty glad I decided to go to the trouble of installing the pro-vent. It may not be neccessary, but I just can't stand to think all that oil is getting mixed with exhaust and coating the entire inlet system of my new bus. The other thing I learnt today was to make sure you dont drop bolts in the engine bay! Jeebus, I dunno how mechanics that specialise on these things stay sane!

OK, job complete! Happy enough with the brackets strength and provent clearance. Hoses all route pretty well, though getting the hose on the inlet side of the air intake was a bit of a job.

Nothing rubbing to any extent. The power steering hose is touching, but there isn't any pressure on it. Will see how it goes if there is any rubbing, though I don't really expect it to be an issue.

Happy with the clearance here, I don't think i'll bother with foam. With hoses installed and it all tightened up I managed to jag the bends just right! The front doesn't appear to resting up against the headlight rubber either, so, very happy.

Howard, it seperates the oil (or most of it) out of the crankcase blowback line which is plumbed into your inlet system for environmental reasons. Without the provent, you get quite a bit of vaporised oil entering your entire inlet system just after the air filter. When this combines with exhaust gas from the EGR valve, it gums up everything with sludge. Some seem to get more than others, and newer engine cover cases seem to have been designed to try and minimise it, but the provent seems to do a better job from what I have read in the diesel forum. Besides, it can't really do any harm, so other than being a bit of a PITA to install, its good insurance IMO.

Yep fair comment I can see what you mean as some time back when for some unknown reason our T5 decided to have a spate of backfires which eventually blew the intercooler hose off the end of the engine I noticed the insides were coated with a fair amount of oil etc so the Provent would help . That's probably good location for other engine than AXD and AXE. You would have to always remove the Provent with the bracket when replacing the oil filter in these.

                    Ditto here

I was following Greg's tinkering with the Provents, but he was venting the collected oil back into the sump

Your setup is just a Provent and hose in and out?

So how do you empty the oil, and how often do you think you'll have to do it

The drain just goes down and has a tap at the end. Its just clear tubing with a reticulation tap (an inline one like you use for garden systems) That is just rattling around in the space above the plastic cover at the bottom of the engine bay/front of wheelarch. The hose is long enough so i can poke it out one of the holes and drain it easily. Not sure if i'm going to leave it as is yet. Not sure how often i'll have to drain it. Guess it depends how much I drive and how much blowby my engine produces. Greg suggested every few thousand. Will update when I get some idea.

I guess that's a pretty easy solution, if you have the possibility to jack up the van at home at drain it every couple of months, at least it gives you a reason to check things under there every now and then!

In case you want to recirculate it like Greg did, would that mean you'd have to drill into sump and place a connection for the hose?

I can't remember how Greg was doing his sump fitting, gecko, but have a read through this thread in diesels. It's about 6 pages, if you've got the time. Some good info there

With one of these blocks into the stock pressure sender hole in the side of the oil filter housing. Allows you to run the stock pressure sender, an aftermarket pressure gauge ( or a blanking plug ), and a return for the Provent with the Provent one way valve.

Seems to be working a treat, and I don't miss the mess! I wouldn't suggest this for a car where you leave the oil 15k between servicing though, I'm timid enough leaving the condensed oil in the system for 7k or so when I swap the oil and filter between services.
