I am actually running oversize rubber on my 18" 255/55/18 as this is a more common size I have found, but it will have an impact on gearing and speedo accuracy. I'm willing to live with both.
I'm running 255/45/103y falken's on mine, cost $270 a corner if I remember correctly. Keeps the ratios the same and doesn't affect the ride imo. I think 255 is about as wide as they will put on a 8" rim. (i think reccommended is 245, but my placard stated 255/45)
No offense Rob but as long as I can remeber Garret Turbos have been one of the industry leaders in Turbo technology I think if I remember they have been around for a lot longer than the Turbos being fitted to VW,s correct me if I am wrong . You can check this link for more testing info TurboByGarrett.com - Why Garrett . I am not sure about every aspect of life but I do now that Australia is notorious for prices being highly inflated compared top the rest of the world . Just last night my wife showed me a brochure and price list for a Power Pack for one of our kids wheel chairs[its a device to make pushing the wheel chair easier ] any way Australian supplier $3350 available from the UK $1600 including freight , now I don,t know about you but I have seen too many examples of high prices charged here in Australia when the same items are available OS . Howard
ditto on the import. I just imported wheels from the UK. VW wheels, with postage and custom fees and still half price. Garret turbos all the way, they probably actually make the VW ones anyway.
Will look at the falkens, any other brands do the 255/45 with the 103w/y?
***** EDIT ******** updated my comments regarding Robs post above - Clearly I misread the comment, sorry mate - all good !
Anyways, OT - Try the Kumho KU39s ... actually any tyres in the Kumho range are a good option in my opinion, I have used Kumhos in the past and always been happy with them. Depending on where you are there are a couple of suppliers up here in Brissy who do great prices.
*I'm sure you could find a similar decent supplier in Sydney also as Tyres are another thing that businesses enjoy a HUUUGE mark up on (just like OEM parts from VW Dealers haha)
I like the look of those, but they look terribly succeptable to gutter rash. How far out do those spokes sit? got a side on pic?
or, you could learn to park and not run your wheels up the gutter.
problem is with buying tires over the net, I've still got to pay to get them fitted, balanced and the tracking redone. I'm hoping my local tire place come to the party with it..
Oh absolutely Rob , I agree with you. But I still suggest just asking around about prices so you know what you are looking at. The price of
rubber fluctuates massively its offensive ! Good luck with the hunt and get those rims on already as they look shmicko !
No offense taken Howard thats what the was about....
I have bought so much stuff and shipped it over you would not believe it. (Vehicle and household.)
I might sound like a winging POM but I can get stuff half the price from OS including shipping so I am going to do it.
Back to the subject...
The wheels look smart....good purchase!!
Rob
Hey Rob from one ex Pom to another no problem . I,ll tell you a sad but funny one about new mags etc . Two years ago when my son turned 16 I bought him a 97 T4 . As I am a motor trimmer by trade and now fit sunroofs I decided like a good dad to trick his van up , after a few weeks the van was transformed into one sweet ride but lacked decent wheels [it did have some Audi Rims on] so I bought him a brand new set of rims and tyres from Keith 4 Wheels here in Brisbane . We picked the van up and he drove back to home as he was on his learners , we stopped to pick up some stuff at a shop and guess what 16 year old stuck the bloody van into the curb BUGGER !!!! brand new tyre torn open and destroyed and brand new mag gutter sratched GRRR !! TEN BLOODY MINUTES OLD. I could have killed him but as he was only learning I had to remain cool I had yelled at him that he was turning in too close but he did not react quick enough . Any way 3 years on he has not had a repeat I think he learnt to respect his van . Howard
