    Aaah, 4Kw. (and 1+ l/100Km)

Actually, I have the 128 (5cyl) in my camper, and have had a 132Kw (4cyl) loaner on occasion, and have to say I thought the 132 pulled really well, and also from lower revs (but it was an empty van, compared to the camper). Some people worry about the smaller capacity, but I think VW have got this down-sizing worked out pretty well right across their range of engines. Only time will tell about long term reliability, but I reckon I've heard of fewer early problems (on lists like this) than when the 128's first came out.

I will agree after reading reports from forum members about the 2.5 diesel and the 2.0 diesel , but in the petrol model VW took us for a ride my old 2.5 petrol T4 would cruise at 2900 rpm at 100 kays but VW told me when I bought my T5 that the 2.5 wasn,t an option no more but gleefully the salesman told me the performance from the 2.0 was the same as the old 2.5 , what a crock the 2.0 lt struggles to pull the van up hills that the 2.5 would fly up , what they did was to change the final drive ratio so from 2900 rpm at 100kays T4 the T5 is doing 3300 rpm at the same 100 kays end result much higher engine revs and probably shorter engine life . Hi Guys.............looks like I did not put enough info up..............I'm talking 2006 MY07 5speed man here and the 1.9DT 77KW Compared to the 2.5DT 96KW. How 'lacking' is the 1.9DT?

Sorry................so where are we on this scenario..................thanks?

Quite a different scenario. I also had a 1.9 loaner, on another occasion, and thought it did quite well for what it was (again, it was an empty van). Depends a lot on what you plan to use it for. City driving and light loads, probably good. Highway work and heavy loads will work it hard. A lot of these are probably ex tradies, or courier vans, and may have already had a hard life. On the other hand, a lot of the poms on the Brickyard seem to have a high opinion of the 1.9.

And Sunny, I agree with you, but I was thinking more of the recent forced induction engines, eg. 1.2 and 1.4 TSI petrols in Golfs and Polos, compared to the previous NA 1.6 and 2.0. If they'd put a turbo on that old 2.0L petrol it would have been a different story (in fact, not unlike the up-coming petrol T5GP).

Hi 4wheels.........thanks for your input.............had a 1998 dualcab 2.5 petrol which went quite well...........currently looking at checking out a 2006 MY07 dualcab with the 77kw 1.9DT with 166ks on the clock ......................any idea how that would run on highway and hills (Ocean road and back road to Apollo Bay runs) as a runabout/comuter with only loads on every so often (not a full time trade unit). Also with 166ks on the clock is it getting close to its use by date?

            Thanks..............again

As I say, I can't speak from personal experience with the 1.9, but I'd imagine it would handle that sort of use quite well. (There must be worse things than having to drive back and forth in that area all the time). Those poms seem to think the 1.9 is a pretty tough and long lived unit. I think they'd say it's just getting run in. They do have the timing belt that needs changing periodically, so check when that is due, and the cost.

I have driven behind a reasonably loaded T5 1.9TDI a few times. Once it was my customer; we were driving up the steep hill and he didn't seem to me as he would struggle and it wasn't slow. Of course, I showed him my tailgate at the best part of that road.

My previous T5 was a 1.9 77kw TDI. Mine was chipped. It went ok. The chip gave me more oomph at low revs. Did nothing at higher revs. When fully loaded with a car trailer on the back, you know it.
Now, having a 132kw, I couldn't go back to a 77kw. Not that there is anything wrong with them, I just like having more power on tap when I need it. I regularly have heavy machines in the back of the van.

                    Hi Vanners,

i have had the 128 now have the 132, the 132 certainly lacks the punch of the 128 but i am not sure if it purely a noise thing. The DSG gear box is a winner the ratios are far better and found that 132/103 climbs hills with greater easy than the 128.
The DSG does do strange changes when coming down hills.

From my usage i am getting a 25-30% reduction in fuel usage.
