Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • 6 speed sports auto box

    Hi Guys...........more questions please..........

    1. Whats the dirt on the transporter 6 speed sports auto box?

    2. Would you buy a transporter with that box and if not why not?

    Thanks again.

AFAIK, the T5 only ever came with one auto box, until the 7 speed DSG in the T5GP. It was a six speed, torque converter unit, and I think it had a 'sport' setting (long time since I've been in one), but there was never a separate 'sports' auto box. It was never available with 4Motion (unlike the DSG box), which ruled it out for me, but I'm glad now, as some people have had expensive problems.

yes correct 4wheels TDI 25 128kw six speed with dual mode normal setting and sport setting plus triptronic for those who still want to change manually , personally I dont see the point of a transmission with literally 3 boxes in one as this means more to go wrong and more of our hard earned bucks to fix when one of these technical nightmares goes on the fritz [ like ours is doing ] I would be more than happy to have a straight auto tranny without the bells and whistles because if I wanted to change gears myself I would have bought a manual in the first place . If my lovely wife had a manual license I wouldn,t be posting about auto,s . Howard

Sports mode is very good for going up mountainous roads, and manual mode is very good for coming down steep roads as you can make it stay in a low gear to hold the van back, so saving your brakes.

I like my 6 speed auto, but it would have been good if it could connect to the 4 motion system.
