  • 2.5l t5 engine life

    hi all,
i am going to buy a 05< 2.5 t5, and am interested to know if these engines are holding up ok as they near the 200k mark? i have read about water pump problems which spooked me a little, so arew they a major concern?
i also asked in a previous thread how to tell the difference between the 128 kw and the 96kw engine, if the 96 existes here in aust. i haven't had any response yet which answers my query.

    cheers
    eric

KEA Campers use the 96kw in their campers but then again they are made in NZ. If there is no outward signs then the engine prefix will tell you.
Understand how it works, troubleshoot logically BEFORE replacing parts.

        I have a 2006 96kw kombi beach which has done about 120,000km.
The engine still doesn't use any oil and the auto gearbox is still working as new, it has had one fault when the aircon compressor gave up the ghost, and I have replaced the water pump at 100,000km as it was losing a small amount of water over 15,000km.

Other than that it still drives like a dream and easily gets an average economy of 8L/100km.

We have been around Australia in it last year and just completing a 10,000km trip around Northern Territory, and it makes an excellent touring car.

The 96kW T5 has AXD code. Check it in the owner's manual in the section 1.1 on page 1 on left. The engine should last several hundred thousands km, if the VW specified oil was used 100% of the time and changed correctly.

so the 96kw has the AXD code, and going by one of your other threads, the 128kw has the AXE code. do these codes precede the engine number on a plate in the engine bay or elsewhere on the car if the owners manual is not available?
            thanks again

There should be a paper-based data label stuck to the front of the driver's seat base.

There may also be a barcode on the cam cover of the engine, which will have the engine code and number on it.

IIRC and provided the original badging is still on the rear, a 128kw'er will have "TDI" in red on the rear doors/tailgate and red "DI" for the lower powered unit.

And the 4 cyl diesel (? 77Kw) have silver TD and red I.

This all begs the question (originally raised on the Brickyard) with the T5GP, where the 132kw has silver T, red DI; where is our all red TDI with 150+Kw?

                    400+

                    Hi mate,

Kinda late reply I suppose - My father runs a 2.5L Transporter here in Brissy as a Taxi. Its a big Black n White Maxi taxi with the wheel chair thingo on the back.
He has done about 400K from memory now and it seems to still be going strong.
It has had a few issues along the way as with every vehicle and the real problem with these types of vehicles is that there seems to be a very limited knowledge about them here in Brissy so some problems can take longer than they should to resolve.

I am just in the process of buying him a replacement turbo for his VW as the seals are going. Buying a genuine Garret from Germany and getting it shipped over - about half the price of buying from VW in Slacks Creek !!
