The pre 2007 diesels would only have a cat like Transporter mentions, and as it is an open cell design, would flow a LOT better than the closed cell style DPF. To remove a DPF ( highly illegal - huge potential fines ) requires some serious engine coding, and beating the VW ECU takes some doing, plenty of places "say" they can do it, but I know of several people caught out there, only a select few have it really cracked, including the extra hidden code, it's very complex. Here is a typical alternating closed cell DPF - forces the exhaust through porous walls, whereas a cat has no blocked ends - more like many drinking straws:
On the Golf with DPF, removal gains you an immediate 15 or so hp, it is that restrictive ( I reckon a cat delete would be worth mabey 1hp in comparison ) and you also get an increase in economy as the engine has less to pump against. Usually the DPF delete tunes then make the most of the removal and offer increased performance, on the GT TDI golf you're going from 170hp to 220hp plus - something you'd definately feel.
I'd suggest people don't bother removing a cat, very little gain on an otherwise stock motor, very illegal - similar potential fines to DPF removal and no one is keen on pollution these days.
I personally have spent years going round and round on this issue, and the current plan is a higher flowing DPF, which may now be a possibility, but a complex and experimental one.
Good info Greg, I would leave my DPF in place, just knock the guts out of it so it looks stock. As you say, its finding the right person who can do the code changes properly. Pendle Performance in the UK sound like they know what they are doing. I'm not sure if they have an agent here though.
Do you know of any tuners here in Oz who can do the code properly (PM me if you prefer).

IVO,
I have sent somebody I know a link to this thread.
We wait with baited breath to see what he knows on this subject.
If I remember correctly he did something like this for a member on here..
Very cryptic I know but dont want to drop him in the poo.
someone on here has done this and gutted his DPF with a re-tune. There was pics floating about a while ago. (it could have been in the UK tho) I'll have a dig for it
Lots of guys have done it in the UK, plenty of pics and stories on the UK forums with very positive results.
Anyone know of a DPF that has be removed under warranty? It would be great to get my hands on a dead one, knock the guts out and install it and see what happens.
How does it know when to regenerate? Is it based on pressure drop on the outlet side or increase pressure on the inlet side or is it a change in pressure between the two? Or is it something completely different.
