Multivan, Caravelle and Transporter models with engine codes AXD, AXE or BLJ must use 506.01 oils.

All other engines must use 507.00 oils, though 4-cylinder PD engines without a PDF may use 506.01 (LongLife regime) or 505.01 (Time and Distance regime) as alternatives.

The brand of oil doesn't really matter - all that matters is whether it's 506.01 approved or not.

Like you say, Castrol Edge Sport 0W-40 only meets 502.00, 503.01 (for petrol engines), and 505.00 (for older diesel engines), so it isn't a suitable oil for any PD engine.

That said, your vehicle has probably been out of warranty for some time now, so as long you aren't having any problems in the meantime... then more power to you.

Just don't spend that money you saved on oil, yet. You may be out of pocket when your engine needs repairs.
What's the exact production date of your T5?

      Could be actually less power.

So, you have the DPF. Buy (you have to use)507.00 oil, you can use Penrite Enviro+ 5W30 it costs less and it is VW approved oil. Check Repco and Supercheap Auto, I saw there Shell Helix UltraExtra 5W30 for $74, it was last week.

The difference is in the base oils and additives. As Diesel_vert mentioned PD injectors in our engines are mechanically actuated from the camshaft lobes and need a special oil so, one have to be really careful what oil you put in the engine.

                Hi,

                I've got a 09 T5 2.5L BPC.

Is the VW504/507.00 oil needed in a T5 because of the DPF and EGR?

Would I still need this oil if the DPF/EGR were deleted?

                Thanks

You will need to run it regardless.

You shouldn’t have any issues with that oil, it’s approved for VW507.00
You just need to check if the approval is still valid, since it expires every 2or3 years.

Thanks mate. But wont be getting now anyway as it's sold out at that cheap as price! Probably go with the same version from Penrite. Damn VW and their 7 litre sumps!

I've used that for the last three years...........no probs.
Supercheap rarely have it............especially in quantities.

They seem to stock the Nulon European at all the Supercheap autos in Sydney now in 5lt only, they know how to charge for it though. Advertised on Ebay through a supplier in Penrith for $55 per 5lt with free delivery and Supercheap have a price match guarentee so it saves $20 over their $74.99 list price. I've had no arguments and they instantly price match at the Mascot store. Autobarn stores also have it in their fathers day catalogue for $59.99 for 5lt.

Can you explain why an approval is still valid as surely the engine doesnt change itself or the oils content as well .

The oil companies change the formulation from time to time. One of the reasons is that some additives aren’t available at the moment.
So the car manufacturers require the sample of their oil to confirm that they’re sticking to the oil specifications.
                                I hope it helps.
