  • T5 with DSG and multi function steering wheel question

    Hi Guys,

Does anyone here have a T5 DSG with a multi function steering wheel?
If yes, does yours have the gear shift buttons on it?

  • #2
No VW MF Steering wheel has gearshift buttons .... the few models that allow gearshift changes from the wheel all have paddles behind the wheel spokes.

T5 DSGs with MF steering wheel do not have the paddles. It is not even an option. It may be possible to retrofit though as somebody in a Tiguan (and the same DSG as the T5) has done exactly that. Required recoding using VCDS (Vagcom), but worked fine. MF Steering wheels with paddles can be found on eBay internationally for about $600.

I have looked at it and it is something I'd like to do in the future as I find the manual mode on the gear lever to be stupid and clumsy. Have to use manual mode often as the stupid attempted engine braking of the DSG on a downhill always results in a shift to 3rd jumping the revs to well over 3500rmin when staying in 5th would have been fine, thus requiring a flick into manual mode to force it to stay in 5th.

And here is the link to the Tiguan paddle retrofit: http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/foru...uan-56968.html

      Thanks for the info.
I am going to take the gamble and get a wheel with the paddles, and see if it works.
I'll let you know how it goes.

Yes, I already have the multi function steering wheel.
I stumbled across the one with paddles because I liked the leather pattern better than the one in my van. So if I can't get the paddles to work, it's not a big deal for me, but it would be cool if it does work. The seller did say that because I have a DSG and a MF wheel already, it should be plug'n'play. I might have to activate the paddles via vagcom.

I am not sure what has to be done if you were to retro-fit a MF wheel. Not sure if the wiring is there for it or not. Pretty sure the MF wheel is fitted in conjunction with the MF display.

If I like the new wheel when it arrives, and it all works ok, then yes. Your name is on the top of the list.

Do you have the MFD in your van? otherwise all the buttons on the wheel are pretty useless.......except for the radio controls maybe?????

Well I've now ordered a DSG MF Steering wheel as well. Having some issues with the seller (eBay) in Portugal as he thinks I did not pay enough for it to cover shipping to Oz, had to get up at 3am this morning to place the winning bid ....... less than $400 shipped, may pay him a few $ more to cover his shipping .... as it is exactly what I want....

Thanks, pity he has no VW DSG wheels at the moment.

And yes that DSG wheel looks good, no GTI or R badges either, so totally OEM look afterwards (except for the square bottom). All MVs should have them from the factory (if it works )

Will also be keeping the old wheel as I'll retrofit again when the TSI MV arrives .....

So the new DSG Wheel was shipped in 2 bits last week, 1 being the wheel itself and 1 being the airbag.

Wheel arrived today and it is brand new and more importantly, it does indeed have the DSG paddles. Very impressed so far. Pics soon ....
