Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    Roof Repairs

Hi Augie, I have also picked up an ex ambulance T5 and I'm starting a bit of work on fit out, I stumbled on this site when I was doing a bit of research into house batteries. My van came with bilstein shocks, springs, a small lift and locking rear diff and seems pretty comfortable in moderately rough stuff. I was wondering if you have patched the holes in the roof that the ambos put in to mount lights etc. Is the roof epoxy based or will plain polyester resin do the trick?

Hey Matt probably a bit late now but I had the local sheet metal shop fold it up for me, I made a few small sections first to get it right then got a two lengths 2.4 long folded up, any shop that can do roofing flashings should do it no problem.
Jazzman, I just used resin I have for surf board repairs and some choped strand matting.

Nice pics - looks like you are having a great time!

I'm counting the days off to my next break...

BTW - Did you remove the driver's side fog lamp surround?

Been to some amazing places in this van, enjoying a sunset over Nigaloo reef with a beer at the moment.
Fog lamp surrond was like that when I bought it.

              Hi Augie
Thanks for the advice on roof repairs, I've just pulled the ambulance lining out and found more holes than I expected. I notice the alloy wheels have gone in the latest photo collection, did they fail or have you gone through a few spares on your trip.

Just bought an ex-ambo from Paul Carr and then this thread pops up in my search. Some great ideas there, Augie. Three high priority tasks on my list; 50mm lift, swivel seats, and roof rack. The rack will hold a kayak and solar panels. Love your idea of brackets to the steel inside and not just to the fibreglass roof. I had a tow bar fitted at sale and it is the higher one to preserve the departure angle. I guess I will be back to this thread as I get more into my conversion.
