  • 132kw fuel economy

    Hi guys,

I thought it would be interesting to see who can get the best fuel economy out of their 132kw TDI, using the readings from the MFD.
Please list the ∅ l/100km, ∅ speed and time travelled from a minimum distance of 500km. That is, you can't list the economy from a short trip of 50km.

Have a look over at this thread an consider signing up to Fuelly and sharing your ongoing fuel consumption with the world

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

        Hmmmm.... tried the fuelly website.
The Fuelly website says my economy is 8.3l/100km, but my MFD tells me: 8.0l/100km, Total trip = 857km, average speed = 45km/h, total time = 19h 09m.
I tend to trust the MFD reading rather than fuelly.
Fuelly's accuracy is reliant on how much fuel you put in your tank, and, I suspect the temperature when you fill up also affects how much fuel you can put in your tank. This morning when I filled up, it was 4°C. Another factor is how much the fuel is foaming up in your tank while filling.

Not just by the temperature, these humans operated pumps could be quite inaccurate I have to say.

That's fantastic fuel economy regardles. However you had better last week.

Was reading something years ago in regards to filling up.

Was said it was best to fill up in the evening or early morning (IE: When it's cooler) & to not depress the filler all the way... Best to use only 50% (Which can make your fill up a great deal longer when your not at a high flow diesel pump).

Unsure how true it is of course but it does make sense.

I will try it, especially not to depress the trigger on the nozzle and 50% volume is probably truth since I've noticed when I filled the tank 1/2 full I had a better fuel economy.

              Thanks for the tips.

                FYI, Those is Sydney.

Vortex Diesel on the Northern Beaches is 1.59.9 still. (and even 1.60.9)
Vortex Diesel at the Caltex in North Ryde. 1.50.9!!

That is a decent saving of $7-$8 on a full tank! I can't believe the rip off prices that are about.

I don't think temp has a great deal to do with it, the pumps are well out of whack tho, I once put 82l into an 80l tank that wasn't empty!! go figure.

I think the 80L figure on the tank is pretty nominal. I've put up to 84 in mine (and I still drove into the servo), but it seems to get a little more every time I rip off a fuel tank strap going off-road (a problem I hope I've cured now). There was also a post a while ago about how to get an extra couple of litres in the filler pipe at the end of your fill (something to do with dodging the venting). Never quite worked out how, but maybe I'm doing it unknowingly.

The code on the plastic fuel tank has an 85 listed in the number, so I presume that it is an 85L tank.
I also have put 84.3 litres after the range on the MFD suddenly dropped down to displaying 25km, and I had about 55km to go to the nearest servo!

I would try different fuel station.

80 ltr tank with 5 ltr reserve I think total is 85 ltr. Seems to make sense to me though I could be wrong.

                          ^^^

Pretty sure the tank size specified includes the reserve tank.

                            FYI.......
In my old T5 Crewvan, 1.9 TDI manual. I was getting on average approx, 6.8-7.0 l/100 km. Then I started using a fuel additive. I normally am not a believer of fuel additives, but I received a 1 litre bottle for free with some gearbox and racing oil. So I thought, what the hell, it cost me nothing. After using it, my fuel economy went down to 6.0 l/100 km.......then my van got written off.
When I got my new T5 GP 132kw DSG, I continued to use the additive. I was getting approx. 8.0 l/100 km. On long trips, I could get it down to 6.8-7.0 l/100 km. I thought I would run the next 4 tanks without the additive, and my economy has dropped. The first tank went to 8.6 l/100 km. I figured this is probably due to some remnants still being in the tank. The next 2 tanks, I cannot get it below 9.0 l/100km.
I suppose you have to weigh up the cost of the additive vs the fuel saved. The additive will cost approx. $3 per tank full of diesel. I have seen 4l bottles for $97, which would bring the cost down to approx. $2 per tank.

I think I'll go back to using the additive. The stuff I am using is from PM Lubricants. It is called PM800.
I have no affiliation with this company.....just sharing my experience.

There are more diesel fuel additives that work then these that don't work.
                              Who sells PM800 in Melbourne?

A bit off topic; I get 9.7L-10.5L/100km all the time from my 4Motion 128kW, it is 2005 no DPF, it was 9.2-9.5L/100km when I was doing 22km trips in the Adelaide's morning traffic up to end of 2007. After that just very short trips.
