  • should I upgrade

    hi
got a T5 2.5TDI lwb auto van and its very handy, now this is my second WV I had aT4 2.5TDI before and I got rid of it after repairing the problematic auto.

The current van has had nearly all the problems that you hear about on this forum repaired ie heat exchanger, water pump, power steering pump, cracked manifold and I am repairing the turbo now as a result of the failed water pump. oh and crap CD players and small electric faults
What I would like to know is if I keep this van should I expect to keep repairing water /power steering pumps and welding manifolds every few years or are they good once replaced with a new part. I know I had 4 CD players put in under warranty and then went and brought a sony as they VW unit was crap(kept eating CDs).

If I keep it I will certainly service the auto and somewhere down the track expect to repair that too or is it time to upgrade and live in peace knowing the you have warranty to back you up.

Are the new t5.2s any good? or the same **** all over again. I know that they have not been around too long but if VW is anything to go buy then surely they will have some faults which you would not expect from a quality car manufacturer

If it was me I would upgrade.

Haven't said that, my water pump went in approx. 70,000km and I don't expect that it would fail a second time that soon and if it does, in goes the electric water pump and the hole in the engine block gets plugged.
I don't see the failed CD player as a big issue, since the VW doesn't produce it. I had mine replaced 3 times and then, I had enough and installed the Clarion unit in with no CD (the agriculture one; media player). I trust the van to go at least 250,000km with no major issues and well, if it would brake down it cold always get repaired and I would still be financially ahead. IMO, it all comes down to what you use your van for. If carrying passengers most of the time and the van was unreliable in the past, than replace it, especially when you have an auto that already failed once.

The 4 cylinder TDI has been around for a long time and it shouldn't have the problems the 5 cylinder engine had. I still love mine. The same engine block seats under the bonnet of the the race Touareg 3 that won the Dakar rally 3rd time in row now, so it can't be that bad.

      thanks Transporter

done tranny on old T4 van not this on one
van is used for family getaways and hauling race bike around the state and towing a small caravan -jayco eagle approx 1200kgs gvm
yes I would be financially ahead keeping her ,wife said I had to wait longer as it took me 8 years to upgrade her car(now has a prado).
I am wearing her down though but shes not so keen on VWs. So we are looking at options and heaven forbid a hyundai I max/I load is similar in size with twin sliding doors as standard (A must for us with the kids) and options similar to current van( 2.5lt common rail diesel 125kw 392nm) but not comparable to new t5.2 options

any one towing with the new t5.2's I noticed they down graded the towing capacity from 2500kg to 2000kgs (hyundai is 2000kgs for manual 1500 for auto)

how sick is that Race Touareg 221kw and 600nm

ps how do you add signature?

Fenno, 1 thing to look out for in the Hyundai .... it does not have cruise control, even as an option and if you're planning on family getaways, then I suspect cruise is a must ....

2.0TDI (103kw) is tried and tested over many years with very little going wrong, new 2.0BTDI 132kw may take a bit of time to bed down reliability wise as I've heard of multiple engine failures in Germany..... .... too early to tell how Oz will treat these .....
