  • Is the "5" dead?

Comparing a few specs the other day, the new 4 cylinder has the same bore and stroke as the old 5 cyl. If the 5 had the same new common rail induction system even with single turbo a power rating of 150kw and 500nm would be an easy factory setting, and the chip tuners would have a ball. I'am sure there would be factory mules running around some where in the world with common rail 5's.
Yes there are gearbox limitions with the 5 but what do you think [or have heard], is the 5 in the transporter dead, or will it be back??

    cheers Pete

In a sense it is overengineered, most likely more costly to manufacture and certainly costly to maintain.

I think VW changed from 5 pot to the four to reduce manufacturing cost and get a small increace in efficiency.

With Euro6 emissions coming soon, you will notice that almost all car manufacturers are downsizing their engines and reducing the number of cylinders.

Yep....Euro6 has killed the five in the Transporter. Luckily.....you can still get a common rail 5 cyl VW engine in the Crafter.......reverse engineering anyone?

Well, I kind of like my PD injection system in 5cyl. engine. It could be more reliable in long run, than CR injectors and hi pressure pump.

The lack of 5 cyl. will most likely hold me back from upgrading my T5. Who needs the timing belt and 2 turbos, it's like one wouldn't be enough to worry about, not to mention DPF in newer van.
I think, I will try to keep it as long as possible.

Same here. I've decided to put my upgrade plans on hold and get as much life as I can out of the ol' T5.

I would think that although the new 2.0 and old 2.5 share similar torque and power figures, that the 2.0 would be a little more sluggish off the line.
Anyone viewed any torque/power curves for both?

Although I've been told it's a change in design, all 132kW tdi's only have a silver "T" and red badging colour for the "Di" while the most powerful engined versions historically used to have all red badging...well one can live in hope.
