  • HELP! T4 owners. Relay in wrong spot?

A few weeks ago i had a problem with the van not starting.
    Previous thread - http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/f136...tml#post536421
Ever since then the radio (not a VW) has not worked.
It has power to it, it ejects /takes CD's but nothing else works.
No sound or display. I have checked the fuse on the back of the radio, and checked the van fuses all are ok

I'm thinking i have put a relay back in the wrong spot?
Does anyone have a picture of a list of where they should be?

    Thank you

What radio is in there now?

Pretty much every radio should have a similar combo of wires:

Permanent Power (keeps your clock running)
Switched Power (turns on when you turn the acc on)
    Ground
Remote (for switching on amps and electric antennas)
Light Sense (for auto dimming when you turn on the lights)
    Speakers

There might also be various RCA outputs for an AMP and/or video screen.

If your getting power it should work, if it's not, it very well may have just packed it in. Did you touch it when playing with the glow plugs?

I'd checking all the connectiong especially speaker outputs and maybe just doing a quick and dirty wire in of a known working speaker to be sure.

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

I have a JVC brand stereo.

I have been out to play with it, if you turn the key on slowly the radio comes on, BUT this is at the click before accessories.
When you get to accessories it turns off and doesn't come back on even when van is started.

I played around with the relay's today i can get the radio to stay on and work, but then a few of the wiper settings don't work.
I think i have the relays arse about. I called VW they were no help to me.

can someone take a picture/or tell me which relay is ment to go where?
          Mine currently look like this

Can't help with a picture as I sold my T4 3 years ago however I used to service it with a local mechanic that knows them very well and good value. His father used to service my uncles VW from the early 70's so they've been around for a while. I noticed you're in Melb so if this business is close to you might be worth a call.

Or John at Volkshome in Thomastown
Just took a couple of shots in a T4, but it's a petrol, and the relays are 174,197,36,30 and 18
They're in different spots to yours (mostly) so I don't figure my pics would be any good to you
                  Good luck

I have just been out and checked my relays and they are in the same position as your photo. Another possible cause could also be the ignition switch. It is a common fault with them, and affects the radio. My radio would not work on the acc position, however would power up just before reaching the acc position and then drop power. The ign switch can be somewhat fragile when they get a little older and it may be a case of murphy's law that it happened when your were working in the general area. I had my switch totally fail while just turning the key while i was testing it. The switch should cost you about $20 for an aftermarket ( mine's aftermarket & now about 18 months old ) Golf's of the same year generally have the same switch. Plenty of info over on the t4 forum about this stuff. Hope it helps.

This is what mine does now.
I have ordered a manual online, and will look up the ignition switch like you have mentioned. Where would be the best place to buy one?\

Thank you for your help it's greatly appreciated!!

it's a 10 min job to replace. You have to modify a small phillips head screwdriver to allow to to remove the mounting screws. the screwdriver needs a 90 deg bend put in it. You will see what i mean when you look at the bottom of the ignition barrel.

You could try hsy ( South yarra auto parts in Church st Richmond) Imparts on Hoddle st Abbotsford may also be an option ( i think they may only wholesale to the trade) otherwise genuine. Hope this helps.

Sorry to sound stupid but when you say ignition switch, do you mean ignition barrel?
Hopefully the manual i have ordered will show me what your talking about.

And is it a job a woman can do, or will i need to have stregth to replace it?

The ignition swith screws to the bottom of the barrel via 2 small phillips head screws. Fairly straight forward, just a little fiddly, hence the screwdriver with a 90 deg bend. Remove the steering colomn shroud along with fuse panel cover to allow good access.Have a look at the base of your ignition barrel, the switch will possibly be black in color with an electrical plug on the bottom. Once you sight it, it will all become fairly self explanatory.
