    It is not a DPF.
Anyway when you start up in the morning do you get characteristic diesel engine smoke fumes from your exhaust or you smell nothing. If you smell nothing than you have DPF. If you drive normaly and than take of realy fast from the traffic lights is there cloud of gray/black smoke behind you? If yes than you don't have DPF. Further more DPF fitted vehicle would have exhaust pipe so clean that when you put your finger in the tail pipe it will be clean. Not the case of my T5. Also tail gate has some diesel smoke build up on it and rear bumper bar is dirty from the fumes undrneath. Check all these. Like I said DPF should have some wires leading from it. Your picture doesn't show that.
    I hope that helps.

Thanks mate, looks I dont have a DPF! It smells a tad at start up, does leave a puff of smoke at lights which is more noticeable at night in car headlights.

So looks like I will stick with the Fuchs 506.01 and if I cant get it will go to the 507.

Keep in mind that Castrol SLX longlife2 was developed especially for R5 engine together with VW. Check the price at the dealer for Castrol. When I bought Titan 506.01 0W-30 from Motortraders it was the same price per L. as Castrol oil from the dealer. I always keep enough oil at home for at least 2 oil changes.

In relation to the DPF, the simple check to determin if you have one is when you turn on the ignition there is a DPF warning light that intially glows. Check the book for the symbol. The above photo shows the DPF I think? Doesn't the DPF replace the need for 'catholic' converter as part of the exhaust system?

          Regards,

          Scott

My van has a DPF. While it is a similar size and shape to the component shown in the photos in post #12, the lack of sensors tells me it definitely isn't a DPF. IIRC correctly a DPF has sensors for input gas pressure, output pressure and maybe temperature too.

re "As long as I can get 506.01 I will keep using it. R5 engine was tested with that oil and in long life ser vice interval some people done more than 500,000km in Europe. I don't know about 507.00"

I have done 540,000kms in my T4 TDi running basic old Castrol RX (changed every 10,000kms) and its still going well, tho recently retired to the back yard. It has a fairly easy life as a Pilot/Escort vehicle tho.

Can't get it so I have some Fuchs for the next service and after that I am getting VW branded stuff that is cheaper than the Fuchs and the Liquimoly.
