Hi my old man has a dual cab T5 and i was wondering if anyone here has done an oil change for the 2.5 TDI? What special tools are needed and what oil is recommended?
Can't help with tools, but I suggest you use a VW 504.00/507.00 oil (504 is the petrol standard, 507 is the diesel standard for VWs). It can be a bit hard to find but VWs are notoriously fussy about oil, so it pays to use the correct stuff.
If you look at more recent info you will find 507.00 superceded 506.01 for all VW TDIs (except for some very rare early 2.5s with DPFs). As time goes on it will probably get harder and harder to find 506.01 anyway.

Before 2006 which is without DPF use 506.01.
Otherwise you are correct 507.00 suprscedes 506.01
I stand by my earlier statements in Posts #2 and #5 (ie use VW 507.00), but 506.01 is OK too for all the non-DPF R5s you are likely to see in Oz (but only if you can get it).
If you want to pore over endless oil threads have a look on the TDI club and Brickyard T5 forums, huge amounts of info there about 506.01 and 507.00 and what additives they have and why etc etc.
The short version is:
Early R5 motors had marginal toughening on the cams and followers, which led to catastrophic wear on some motors (particularly if an incorrect oil was used). 506.01 had a special additive to help protect these weak points, it was also designed for the variable length servicing that they have in Europe (not an option in Oz)
507.00 was developed to have low SAPS so if your engine burnt a bit of oil it didn't foul DPFs. It is also suitable for variable servicing.
Some people (myself included) believe that 507.00 also has the required anti-wear additives needed by early R5 motors. One bloke on the brickyard T5 forum actually chased down the properties of the 507.00 spec from the suppliers to the oil companies. 507 is supposedly better than 506.01.
There are other (lesser) VW TDI oil standards around, but I wouldn't use them when better oils (ie 507.00) are available.
I can't really be bothered arguing further, the bottom line is that everyone should use the oil they think is best suited for their particular vehicle - that's what I do

If you go just by HTHS (high temp. high shear) index than 507.00 could be better than 506.01
506.01 HTHS indexis 3.06
507.00 HTHS index is 3.5
As long as I can get 506.01 I will keep using it. R5 engine was tested with that oil and in long life ser vice interval some people done more than 500,000km in Europe. I don't know about 507.00.

I don't think that you have DPF fitted. In that case I would use VW506.01 oil unles the owners manual says something else.
I will take a pic of it and you guys with some knowledge on this can tell me if it is.
You have to look at the back of the engine: follow exhaust pipe up to the exhaust manifold, if you can see device look like round mufler with sensors at both ends - that would be DPF.
