looks the same to me. I mean what could be so different if just the bonnet and bumper are covered. I know its called a "facelift" but the headlights are the same size and shape and it has the same grooves on the bonnet as the current model. wow different grille and fog light area.

IMO there is.
I reserve my criticism when I see the van in the showroom.
I think it will be worthwhile upgrade and if I would be on the market for the new van I wait for it.Performance Tunes from $850Wrecking RS OCTAVIA 2 Link

Silly me for assuming a facelift meant exactly that....a facelift.
If there are wholesale changes(eg:drivetrain) in the pipeworks aswell it would be classed as a new model or at the very least a T5.5 or series II.
My late 07 has a different sliding door mechanism to my mates 06 is that a facelift? From 08 on T5's have clear side indicators, is that a facelift?
All I am saying is that if this is a facelift, it looks like its gonna be a poor attempt. If this is a new model, well its still gonna be a poor attempt.
Are you sure that footage isn't just of someone driving around with a car bra?

Mild facelift to bring the looks back into the family (read Golf).
Plus the new engine range based around the new common rail 2.0L TDI motor. Hence the engineer's monitoring trailer being towed by the mule. Saw heaps of these in far western NSW during the summer months when I was based there.
But it's still a T5. T4 had quite a few engine and driveline combos/upgrades throughout its life......and it remained a T4.

Can't wait to see the specs on the new engines, though am a bit worried about the decrease in engine capacity, as they already extract a lot of power and torque from the 2.5 tdi. If the old adage 'there's no substitute for cubes' is anything to go by, then I have to wonder about durability and reliability when extracting the same or more power/torque from an even smaller engine. A 2L engine in a 2.4 tonne van, with a 2.5 tonne towing capacity, seems a bit ridiculous. Can they pull it off?

And the new VW engines are promised to do better figures...so holding to old paradigms may not be such a sensible thing.
Frankly, my 2.5TDi manages just 75kW and it lugs about my T4 DOKA (even when fully loaded with a tonne of gravel) just fine thanks....

Yes I an wonder what the limits are with front wheel drive only with all that extra torque pulling the extra weight. Must put a lot of strain on engine mounts, front tyre wear, torque steer etc when compared a 4WD.

Before leaving my dealership yesterday I popped into the sales area and asked about the time frame needed on ordering a new Transporter. I was told that with the options I needed it would still be upto 16 weeks unless a vehicle in the order pipeline was available and could be altered to my specs. The interesting part was that the dealer had pretty much sold all it's allocation for 2009 and had on order a hell of a lot more for 2010. (thanks to the Government tax benefits) I then asked the rep about the T5 upgrade and one of the service men next to us actually replied referring to it as T5-SG (?) Sorry, I just didn't pick up on it very well, however it definately wasn't T5.5 or anything numerical. I was informed that if I waited until Sept. there would be information available on pricing etc for the upgraded model. The 2.0L TT common rail engine is thought to be approx 130kW and the same 400Nm, as Phaeton posted earlier. Edit. Phaeton, mentioned a rumoured 500Nm , which would be brilliant if reality. I did get the impression the sales/service guys new more about the upgrade, which hasn't been my experience this far out from release of a new vehicle.Last edited by Tornado T5; 15-08-2009, 08:36 AM.

Front wheel drive on its own, coupled with increased weight, towing extra weight etc has got to hit its limits if there is say 500nm going though the drive train.
An auto 4 motion would be nice if they come out with one.
Cheers,
Scott
PS the DMFs are only on the manual versions is that correct?
