Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Wading depth again

I've looked at the kits for increasing wading depths in a T5/T5.1 These seem amazingly overpriced. I've also looked at some generic kits.
Has anyone got the dimensions of the breather on the DSG auto transmission (vehicle as below). I'm pretty sure the part no is something like TF60SN 09G. It is a push in part used in many transmissions BUT I cannot find the dimensions of the piece/tube that fits into the transmission, or its O-ring. I'm hoping I don't have to pull off my bash plate to try to pull it out (without moving the engine). (Maybe someone has a spare auto transmission sitting round somewhere!!) IF anyone can help here, I'd be greatly appreciative. If I can get these dimensions, I'll have all I need to fabricate my own "kit". I already have the bits for the rear diff breathers. And I'm almost sorted for the air input to the air filter.(AliExpress is worth trawling.)

    Thanks folks.

Hey Dave, you're spot on about the wading kits being overpriced—seems like anything labeled "off-road" comes with a premium! The breather on the TF60SN / 09G DSG transmission is indeed a push-in type, and from what I recall, the fitting is around 8mm outer diameter, with an O-ring of approximately 10-11mm. The breather hose itself is usually 6mm ID (inner diameter). If you’re planning to extend it, using a good quality fuel-grade hose with a snug fit should work fine.

If you're looking to DIY, check if your breather has the plastic cap with a one-way valve—some models do, and you might need to swap that for a proper open-ended extension. Also, if you haven't already, consider routing the extension well above your planned wading depth, preferably into the engine bay. If you get stuck, some VW/Audi parts suppliers might have the breather as a spare part rather than a full kit.

Hope that helps, mate! Let us know how the project goes!

      Andy,
Thanks so much. I was pretty sure the size of the fitting is close to what you say. I was hoping for a definite dimension but even AI engines can't be precise. The part itself would cost me close to $30 but I don't want to buy one as I don't need it - just its dimensions. I intend to use a push in fitting of some sort to totally replace the present breather. Thinking of a a barbed nylon elbow of about 8/9mm or so and putting one or more O-rings on it. I've got all the other parts (including 6mm pipe, pneumatic press fittings, connecters, sintered filters and a home-made bracket) - and once this Queensland rain has gone I might try to remove the breather to measure it. I know that Seikel say you have to drop the engine a bit, but I'll see if I can avoid that.
All breather extensions will run to well up the firewall - but NOT to the divider for the battery compartment as it would make it difficult to remove the divider.
I'm also working on raising the air intake using a system similar to the Terranger one.

Again, thanks for your interest Andy Welcome to the Forum.
