Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • T5 2.5 lost all gears

So doing the school run the other morning I lost gears 2, 4 & 6. By the end of that trip I lost all forward gears (didn’t check reverse).

Has anyone come across this problem? Is this a relatively simple fix?

I promised my kids I’d take them to the drive in movies in the van. If I can fix it just to do this, I’d be happy.

    Auto or manual?

Either way it sounds big, and if auto, won't be simple or cheap.

We lost all of our forward movement after VW serviced ours many years back , the internal filter /oil pick up which is inside became blocked and left us with no drive . It was serviced and only a few kilometers from the dealers while sitting at lights I put the foot down and van just rolled forward with no drive . After quickly turning the van off and on and restarting it drove to the next set of lights where it performed the same trick over and over for the next 5 sets of lights . It turns out the filter was partially blocked because VW would not remove the sump pan and change the filter so the "service " had just flushed more gunk out of the parts which finally completely blocked the filter with the resulting then rebuild of the box as it was totally destroyed . VW refused to help even though they had "serviced " it , I fought with VW Australia and even sent photos of the filter to Germany and after two years after intervention from ABC TV VW decided to make a "goodwill "payment to cover half the cost of the rebuild . Last thing they knew this was a problem because 3 big changes happened with the T5.1 model with DSG was released 1 they had a 60000km service schedule 2 the filter was now on the outside "surprise surprise " 3 they fitted a transmission oil cooler because in the earlier one the fluid would burn black and block the filter and also cause the dreaded flaring .

More than likely the gear stick linkage system.

Is this a known problem with these?

I was reading about it on the VW T5 Australia facebook group. Some people have managed to fix theirs temporarily using cable ties. Apparently you can take a cover off below the gearstick and see the broken part. If you are already on FB it would be worth joining this group. The thread is by Justin Marais about 2 days ago, and has pictures and the part on ebay that you may need.
