Issue with 235/65 R17 tyres on my T5.1

I've run a set of 4 Pirelli Scorpion ATR tyres on my van and replaced them this week.
I bought 5 obo something I'd read here or elsewhere to the effect that the larger 235/65 tyre would fit into the spare carrier.
I found out that this tyre will NOT fit the carrier! I wonder whether it is actually the nature of the lugs that cause the issue. I haven't yet got under to look at it.
The tyre fitter reckoned I'd need a longer bolt, but also need to do something with the plate the tyre sits up against, and possibly the hinge.

I'd be very pleased to hear from anyone withvexoerience/expertise on this issue.

I went to 18s on my TS.

The carrier had the capability of the "down hanger" at the back being adjusted to a second position that allowed another 20mm or so depths.

The bolts were fine then.

Try deflating the tyre also

As Kiels said there is a second front hinging position to allow for bigger tyres , we had to change ours as well for our T5.1

Well,
I've found the issue the tyre fitter reported is correct, unfortunately.

The adjustment on the hinge arrangement was already using the maximum depth. The wheel+tyre looks to be 10-15mm too large a diameter for the space available. It MAY be possible to gain the space by removing the plastic shroud above the spare though I'm not sure the reason it is there.

Looks like further investigation is needed.

Has anyone removed that plastic shroud? Does it (pre)serve anything vital?

Mmm. Just found Seikel make a replacement plastic shroud for this very purpose - looks like a not uncommon issue but something makes me think it may be a 4motion issue as the Seikel product is only for the 4motion. (Underride spare wheel holder for oversize tyres - Seikel).

Wow 600 Euro for that! Can't see myself spending that - have seen on the UK forums people discussing this issue and what they've done to resolve - might be worht a search on there.

ALso running with this issue, so curious to see how you get on and what you go for !! I need to get the same size spare sorted soon, currently running the risk that my AT's wont go flat :S

This doesn't talk about wheel/tyre diameter though. The hanger solution is basically that indicated in the Seikel product, though the Seikel solution actually lengthens the supporting bar as well, removing the connecting tabs in hanger bracket and bolting a new hinge onto the diff bolts.

I'll be able to look at the thing again by the weekend, I hope.

Hi Dave,
here is my solution to having a 235/65R17 spare fitted.

T6.1 Multivan 4Motion equipped with Seikel Suspension with rear diff spacer and Almont rear diff protection plate fitted.

Without the diff spacer and protection plate this modification is not viable.

Step 1: Fabricate the spare wheel carrier. Cut off the factory hanger end and attach hinge using M10 x 20mm Mushroom head bolts/nyloc nuts. Hinge purchased from Bunnings.
Correct alignment was achieved by bolting the cut carrier in place and clamping the hinge to the outer side of the protection plate. Holes were drilled in the long arm of the hinge and protection plate where good access was available on the plate. Grind, sand and paint.



Step 2: Prepare under the van. Cut out the hanger bracket and make good cut surfaces.
Cut off the rear tab on the Almont Protection plate






Cut away section painted and rear of plate made smooth. Countersink the new holes in the alloy protection plate.

Step 3 Attach carrier to plate
Loosen both rear bolts of the protection plate, remove drivers side bolt.
Slide hinge between plate and diff sub-frame.

Insert bolts M10 25mm Countersunk hex head; starting with the rear protection plate bolt and continuing onto other bolts.

Insert wheel and tighten up in the usual way;


This carrier is holding a 235/65R17 wheel/tyre. The plastic surround has not been cut or modified.
I have used M12 x 1.5x100mm stainless bolts in the carrier with hex heads. The bolt spacers are made from thick walled aluminium tubing.
Cost of build: $180 +
Carrier $70 (second hand)
Hinge $30
Bolts, washers and nyloc nuts (all stainless steel) $30
Paint, primer and black $30
Aluminium tube $20 (OD 24/ ID 12mm)

Plus sundry items; recipro saw, grinder, hex sockets, sander, thread grease, drill bits & countersink bit.
