  • T5.1 Multivan Aircon blower motor fault

    Hi Van lovers
My 2011 Multivan has developed a fault with the AC blower motor
The fan wont stop running after the ignition is turned off, sending the battery flat
I removed the LHS dash to access the motor and unplug the fan, part # 7E6 820 021
My local auto electical guy said a replacement fan would remedy the problem
Sourced a replacement fan motor from a wrecker and installed the unit today
It did not fix the problem, the replacement fan will not shut down either
Guessing the fan is not the issue here
    Any ideas?
    Thanks Snickerty

    Hi Snickerty,

That is really odd. Unless it is an ignition related fault?

I had to replace my fan last week. After trying to nut out Chinese knockoff part numbers, I bit the bullet and bought an oem at $572. Ouch, but got it the next day and installed it. I also had pulled the original out about two years ago greased it to cure a squeaking noise. But it had now failed with on and off running. Not easy to operate on and replace brushes etc, so replacement it was.

    Cheers, Scott.

      Hi Scott
      Thanks for the reply
Can you tell me who you got your replacement fan from
My local dealer quoted me $715.00
      Thanks

Check out the wiring diagram, there will be a relay or control module that will send power to the fan, hopefully it will be just a stuck relay.

It was Camberwell VW in Melbourne.

            Hi MIG
Any ideas where I can get a schematic for the Multi, not sure where to start
            Thanks

An update on the blower fault-

I sourced and fitted a second hand fan motor which did not remedy the fault, the fault was the same as the original fan
The fan keeps running after the ignition is turned off, often at different speeds
Unplugging the fan for 5 seconds resets the system
If you unplug the fan and plug it back in really quick it will keep running sometimes the speed will increase
I have ordered a Fan resistor to see if that fixes the problem #7L0907521B

Erwin is the best place to get all the wiring diagrams if you want to tackle finding the fault yourself.

Here is the wiring for the same-year transporter; I would check pins T5r/3, 2, 1, and 4 to see if the climate control calls for the motor to be turned on.

                  Hi Van lovers

Just recieved the replacement resistor #7L0907521B and installed
It fixed the problem, thanks to Ebay seller parts_au for an excellent quality replica

                  The factory part is $330.00

What I had read about issues with the resistor is some of the fan speeds stop working
In this case the AC fan wouldnt stop working and with each cycle of the ignition the fan would continue to work at different speeds
At no point would the AC fan stop without unplugging it
Thanks for the AC schematic MIG, it helped to understand the resistor was the culprit and not the dash switch

A great result finding the fix with a total spend of $218.00
I hate to thnk what it would have cost to get fixed at a dealer

                  Cheers Snickerty

That's good news. I had been googling for more general information about this out of curiosity, the likely culprits appear to be a stuck relay or a faulty resistor. Scott

Yours must be a more upgrade model VW which the part seems different to the ones in our vans .

I recently though i might need a new blower motor, then found out the fan still worked perfectly but only on speed 4. Turned out i needed a new fan speed resistor, at the exorbitant price of $ an arm and a leg...
