Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Did any T5 come without a handbrake?

I’m on another forum where someone is certain that the early 2004 T5 transporter they once owned, had NO handbrake whatsoever.

Despite being advised that ADR 35 mandates the inclusion of a handbrake in all cars registered in Australia, this person asserts that his T5 was completely lacking one.

They suggest that there were about 10-20 very early ones that made it into the country without a handbrake/parking brake of any kind?

Can anyone here confirm if this is possible?

I very much doubt a road regoed ADR complied vehicle would lack a handbrake
    my 04 has a handbrake
There was a recall for 04 models for handbrake issues.Mine still has the recall sticker

Never going to happen as if the car was a maual it would probably roll away on steep hills , my 2004 T5 did roll away even in first gear with the handbrake on . We live on a very steep hill and I had just driven home so the rear discs were still hot and were holding fine , after 30 minutes or so when they cooled it slowly rolled back wards against the engine compression . Ok it did have over 300000kays so compression was a bit lacking took out a few shrubs next door after it mounted the footpath and finally stopped agains a beat up Hyundai Sonata and a telegraph pole about a hundred metres down the hill .
